Does anyone have a original black center console they want to sell? I found a green one and thought about trying to stain it, but thought I would ask first. Has anyone staind anything similar to this? How did it look afterwards?

Yup, I have stained a beige one to black. I took it totally apart, cleaned it well and then used black vinyl dye on it. It turned out great. I expect that mat black spray paint would work just as well.

In case your interested, I have two consoles for sale; a light blue one with the seat belt holders (1st. generation) and a darker blue one with cup holders (2nd generation).

My original console had a whacked-out bottom section and the top section (the thing the lid sits on when it's closed) was broken too. I got a '76 console that was broken (paid entirely too much for it on eBay, but it was covered in fabric, so I couldn't tel lit was broken). It was tan, but it's all black plastic under that paint. Anyhow, the sections that were bad on that one were good on my console, so I Frankensteined together a good console and vinyl died it black. Looks fine to me.

I'm looking for $70 plus shipping for that Gen. 1 console - Or I'll be satisfied with one case of Bacardi 1873.

Where can I find this black vinyl dye and how is it applied? Is it better to use the dye rather than just painting the console?

What I was going to use comes in a aresole can from the Eastwood Company. Here's a link: type in Item-no 52066 Z . Then click on application.

Any auto body supply store should have vinyl dye and the cleaner/prep solution for the dye. It's kind of like spray paint, but it penetrates the surface of the plastic/vinyl to get a better hold...
