I knew there used to be a city ordinance a few years ago that it was illegal to warm up your car while parked on the street... like, if you went to start it up in the morning and let it warm up in the winter before you drove off. Now I heard if you start and warm up your car and leave it run at all even in your own driveway or property you are breaking the law.

Who comes up with this stuff?

I think only because your leaving a running vehicle unmanned, you can warm it up just stay in it. Theres always some focktard out there waiting to snatch one, a guy in the paper couple weeks ago did just that and then crashed it into someones house...

About 10-15 years ago, some misguided moron stole the Salt Lake county sheiriffs car. Out of the drive way while it was warming up. At his residence. And yes he did get caught. Talk abou about bad timing.

Think remote start. Car dies if you put it in gear without the key in the ignition and set on on.

I think that some police chief came up with that idea when he got too many calls on stolen cars in one day by people leaving thier cars running with the keys in them. Seem's reasonable.

It is a state law in texas that you can't leave your keys in your car or leave the motor running. IIRC it is so that a kid can't get into a car and accidentially put it in gear.

Wichita's ruling is you can't leave a vehicle running unattended with a key in the ignition or doors unlocked.

My solution with the old blazer:

Start truck, remove key from ignition, lock doors. Go back inside.

Although, not everone has the luxury of removing their ignition key while in the 'run' position ;)

Hey steve, buddy, uh, you do realize we have a spell checker now, it all started after someone on the city council had their car stolen when they were warming it up in the driveway. The gun he had in his car was still safe under the seat when they found the car. Good ole town council...

My 97 C2500 has the "Luxury". Do it every morning. Got myself in trouble with it last week. Drove 20 minutes to Tractor Supply, got there, shut the truck off... and realized my keys were still at home. Luckily as my friend showed up to give me a ride I remembered I had a spare IN the truck.

Sounds like a stupid rule to me. Doesn't matter if they pass an ordinance banning it here in Murphy or not, I'm still going to do it until a LEO tells me I can either stop doing it or pay a $100+ fine.
