    A little slop is fine, and normal. (up to about 1/4" or so, since there are a few variables) If you can move it far enough that the c-clip falls back off, or is close to falling off, you have some problems. Did you pull the axle and inspect it, as well as the pinion shaft? (what the end of the axle hits)

    It won't be the gears, unless the thrust washer on that axles side gear has failed, taking the side gear with it. More than likely, that washer may just be worn down a bit, if at all.

    It is ok to shim the c-clip !
    Get a good book, like the factory shop manual, it will give you the specs. for the play !
    My guess is to keep the play around 1/16 to 1/8.
