Well there are several "popular" channels and some of it depends on where you are. Normally Ch 19 (or 17 in Cali) is the trucker channel. Ch 6 has a lot of BIG!!!! radios, guys running several thousand watts. Ch 26 is much like Ch 6 most of the time. Ch 38 lower side band (SSB) is pretty popular in some areas. Your best bet is flip around the channels on a quiet night and find where the local guys hang out.

Don't forget that channel 9 is the universal emergency/distress call channel. Local law enforcement will sometimes listen to this channel along the highways, depends where you are.

In Lafayette, IN, channel 20 was where you could find the locals chatting after dinner.
