Everyone, thanks for the replies and help. Apparently he was able to get a code buster from microsoft that took care of the problem. He said it was a breeze. Only prob now is he can't sign up here on Colorado K5, what gives???

A friend of mine was given a computer. He is online and wants to get to CK5 but this computer has password protection which is preventing him from getting ANYWHERE! Is it possible to override the password or is he screwed? He can't ahold of the original owner either.

Is it the password for the ISP, Windows or is it keeping him from booting the PC?

Does he get the computer booted? What sort of software is installed? What browser is used? Is it that kiddie protection software crap? If so, I'd reformat and reinstall after backing up everything useful to a floppy disk and after making sure all driver disks and the winblows disk (and the stupid key code for it) and a boot disk are made. Drivers you don't have you can download from the manufacturer's site if you can get there.

Man you guys really blew me outta the water here! Basically he gets a prompt for a password, he can hit cancel and it goes away. He signed up for AOL. He can email, send IM's but he gets a password prompt and can't get to any websites cos they're not rated. I dunno what kind of software he has. It was a freebie computer and neither of us knows squat about them except....well.......squat! How do you reformat and reinstall and backup and and and I'm getting dizzy..........

Heres a quick thing to try. Its obvious that he is using a Windows 95/98/ME machine because you can hit cancel and bypass the "Security". Im going to try and do this from memory but I believe in Windows 98 under the control panel there is a users directory(maybe users and passwords) and in that directory there is a check box that says something to the affect of

"all users have the same settings...." Something to that affect it pretty much says that anyone that logs on has the same settings as anyone else. Plus you can check the security settings in IE and see if they are set really high or not.

He has windows 95. We found the security settings but that didn't work. He talked to a friend of his and he told him to dump windows and reinstall it pretty much. I'll let you guys know what happens. He's dieing to get on CK5!

before you re-install, go to control panel->internet options-> click the "content" tab. I think you'll need a password again, but you might be able to disable it.

Also, instead of hitting escape in the beginning, type a different username and hit enter without a password, then see if you can go back and disable content.

There has to be an easier way to get around it than reinstalling. or not...
