I was trying to answer a thread, when typing started on my computer and I wasn't the one that was typing, Too weird should I be worried. I don't understand what's happening ? I have the latest spyware, virus protection and it's doing it when I am writing this new thread? I am worried. What should I do?

Are you on DSL or cable? If you are and do not have a firewall. Anyone can ping your computer for open ports and gain access to your computer and take it over and do what ever they want to with it.

If your comp is doing something is shouldn't disconnect/shut down ASAP. Someone may be writing a program on it. Or using it for something else.

If it happens again, unplug your network or modem cable while it's happening and see if it stops. If it does, change passwords to anything you've accessed online that requires a password asap.
Then get and run some anti-virus software, but you may need to do some fairly extensive cleaning to really get it cleaned out (I.E. Format and reinstall everything).

Also, did anything it was typing look familiar? If it happens again, also unplug the computer's mic and see if it stops.

If you're computer is fairly new and has windows XP with newer versions of office, make sure the voice-activated software isn't running in an untrained mode. An engineer in my company had a very similar problem once, and he ended up figuring out it was speech typing software...it was typing what people around him were saying, but it was untrained, so it wasn't understanding the words correctly...

It's a REALLY good idea to update your virus definition files EVERY day. Mine updates each night automagically. <img>

I am against any "auto" function for any program. You should update at least once a week, but i would recommend you control when the outside world has access to your PC. Auto functions can include personal data, history, etc. Many programs are set to "find home" when you log on to the internet, most without you knowing it. It is best to find the option and turn it off. Firewalls are good if you know how to set them up, otherwise you can have loophole access.

Am i paranoid? You bet. Can't be too safe anymore. There are trojans that disable Virus programs without you knowing.
the big question is HOW LONG did this hacker have access to your PC. If you have a record of the trojan file, take a look and see if it has a date assigned to it. Hopefully it was not too long ago.

By the way I am running two virus programs, Norton and AVG(free) on my pc with excellent results. Norton misses things all the time. AVG cleaned up some crap norton could not find. I have no conflict running both and recommend this setup.

I'm really surprized that a hacker chose a computer on dialup. That's not the most efficient way to hack someones pc. They usually go for servers with some major HD space and ease of access (DSL/cable).

A year or so ago the KY Dept. of Transportation (highway dept.) got hacked by people wanting to use the servers as storage media for pirated movies and p0rn. Several people got fired over it. :yikes:

:thumb: Totally agree! Norton sux! If you have Norton as your only anti virus. You need extra virus protection. I swear Norton must be in bed with Spyware software makers.

AVG free is a good program.

I trashed Norton 2 years ago and went with System suite instead, but the thing is I left the subscription subside for 6 months:frown1: , I forgot about it, but I have only recently had that problem, today was the only incident.
I won't do it again. What a pain in the butt. I spent the entire day messing around with scans defrags and rescans and spyware, It seems like I have taken care of the problem right now, time will tell.
    Thanx all:thumb:
