What is the main difference in processors ?

    for instance,,AMD 3800+ vs P4 3.0 Gig

for the average user is the really a big difference in speed or power ??

and why would you select one over the other??

They each have their strong points and weaker ones. The architecture determins what they work best on. The 3800 does not mean 3.8. The AMD runs a little hotter IIRC. Opinions vary on the pro's and con's a little.

The AMD's are slower on paper than the Intel stuff , yet they are able to hang with them because the AMD's do more actual work per clock cycle . At least this was before the current stuff . Some will say the AMD is fine for single applications , and the Intel is better for multiple applications .

Now some benchmarks are skewed towards each proccessor ( most people write articles for their advertisers though ) , but its a moot point , as each will function just fine for most people in home use .

I prefer AMD though . Intel is like Ford to me :thumb:

Ditto. I use AMD processors and Linux as an OS. I try to avoid Intel and Microsoft, mainly because Microsoft is insanely expensive and I like Open Source software and AMD is much cheaper than Intel in terms of similar performance CPUs.

I just tinker with Linux on my spare box , trying each distro . The wife won't use it , and some games refuse to run on it . So my main box is XP in classic mode .

That was a year or two ago. Today Pentiums have a higher clock speed, but AMD chips are the current speed winners when it comes to amount of work actually accomplished in a given amount of time. Intel has fallen behind the curve and is working feverishly to catch up.

    Benchmark results:
    Open GL
    DirectX 8
    DirectX 9
    Video
    Audio
    Application
    Synthetic

AMD kicked Intel's a$$ in all but the last category. :eek1:

Comparable systems with an AMD chip vs. an Intel chip will also go in favor of the AMD system when it comes to price.

AMD is also taking a considerable amount of market share away from Intel.

I've been running AMD chips for 5 years now and have never been dissatisfied.
