    computer Tech\'s (windows problem)

    When I reboot my computer it gives me the option to start WIN200 or Windows 98....with 15 or 20 seconds it automatically selects the default.... I just used this 98 box to install 2000 on a loose hard drive i have, so 2000 isn't even on this box, I need to remove win2000 as an option at boot up...any directions to the files I need to delete would be very helpful as when i reset my computer if I'm not paying attention it tries to boot 2000 and then freezes up as it doesn't exist /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

    Right click My computer... Properties... Click the Advanced Tab... Then the Startup and Recovery Button... Then tell it default startup is 98 with a 0 sec display

    Just click around on those tabs, you should find something.
    The reason why its showing up is 2000 has itself listed in the boot sector... I dont know if there is a way to change/edit it manually? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

    I didn't think win98 supported multiple booting. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

    Edit the file boot.ini in the root of your C: drive. That's where NT/Win2K get their boot list info from. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Once you're in there, it's somewhat obvious how to set the default boot OS. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

    Since he put 2000 on it, it has the 2000 Boot.ini file now
    Might try replacing that with a win98 boot file, if it doesn't work say hello to the reinstall disk! /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

    Here's another way to fix it (without having to manually edit the boot.ini file): Boot into Win2K then click on Start -> Control Panel -> System. Click on the "Advanced" tab and select "Startup and Recovery". Select the default startup OS from the drop down list at the top of the window. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

    Do you have a Win 98 boot disk? 98 CD? You have to overwrite the some stuff, which should not be done by amatuers!!

    If you want further info PM me and I will tell you how to do it.

    Re: computer Tech\'s (windows problem)

    There're a couple ways to fix this. I would highly recommend editing the boot.ini and forgetting it forever... That's the simplist way to do it without possibly ending up needing support that isn't readily available.

    Boot.ini is a system file, by default hidden and marked read-only.
    You will have to enable viewing of hidden and system files.
    Then, locate the boot.ini file in the root of C: (basically, open my computer, open c: drive),
    right click it and get to properties,
    then uncheck the read-only attribute, hit ok.
    Then double click to open, or open notepad and open the file manually through file->open (don't use word or wordpad, use notepad).

    If your boot.ini looks similar in syntax to this:
    [ QUOTE ]
    [boot loader]
    timeout=3
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Change the "default=" option to be C:\ (or whatever the exact characters are before the "=Windows 98" line), and change the timeout to 1.

    Another option is to re-"sys" the c: drive when booted from a win98 boot disk, which is simple to do, but can become complicated and result in a partial boot system that requires a manual "win" command to start windows (which can be automated, but still more complex than just editing the boot.ini).

    The absolute best way to fix it is to install windows 2000 and forget win98 exists... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

    Re: computer Tech\'s (windows problem)

    This is how my new file looks, this should work correct?

    [ QUOTE ]
    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=C:\
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 98" /fastdetect /sos

    Re: computer Tech\'s (windows problem)

    Not quite, the path isn't necessary for the windows 98 line, that's sort of just waht it will display, you need to leave the C:\ line that originally referred to win98, and change only the "default" line. It hould work anyway with what you have, but I guess you know by now...

    Can't type much, wireless keyboard gon south...

    MAke sure you make a backup of your boot.ini and also have startup disk so you can overwrite your modified boot.ini with your backup in case you have a problem.

    Having said that, win98 sucks and win2000 is much better. Why not just install 2000 and delete 98?
