ok first off im from the south and I feel that it stands for southern pride and the old way of life, remembrance of those lost in the war. NOT racism and that bs. and i realize that EVERY flag is very contreversional...and none of it will EVER be agreed on.

we argued about it for quite sometime at work today...lol. this spanish chick was like "why do you fly it? we arent in that time anymore sooo were not there wtf is the point of flying it?" i says to her "why do yall fly your mexican flags? were in AMERICA NOT spanish countries "were not there anymore" she got pissed and walked away. lol

anyway i figured that there should be some drama lol.

so basically how do you view it?

most people view the confederate flag, or the stars and bars as this:
ignorant hillbilly rednecks that cant spell, and should be turned loose with their sisters or words with more than 6 letters because they get confused and add in extra letters...:deal: :deal:

but then, it is really from a time gone past, and kind of dated... not to say i wont fly one just to piss off my neighbors and their loud music hispanic polka playing ignorant selves...

i do agree about the foreign flag thing.. if you're so proud of that country that you want to fly that flag, go back, if you are here for a better life and better living conditions, then you should fly the AMERICAN flag... until then, fly a mexican flag, then you're a mexican, nothing more.... have some pride for your heritage, fine, but have a little pride for the country that makes your better life possible, will ya? common decency, respect, etc

It's a symbol. Unfortunately, symbols are at the mercy of interpretation.

I happen to have a tattoo of a confederate flag inside of a heart on my left shoulder, surrounded by the words "Truth, Honor, Justice". It represents a "rebel heart" and lists off the three words that rule my life. I have been accused of being a white supremacist because of my tattoo, and I gave up trying to explain it's significance years ago. My generic reply: "Perception's a bitch, isn't it??".

And that rule pretty much applies to all symbols.

It's not the Confederate flag. It is simply a battle flag used mainly by the Army of Northern Virginia.....

it stands for the CSA. The CSA was a state with many worthy characteristics, and one bad one (slavery). I have no problem with the confederate flag... though I think its silly for people to fly them today... mainly because no one currently alive is (or ever was) a citizen of the CSA.

The CSA flag, in my eyes, stands for the south and a culture that is quickly disappearing. The battle flag, while it still sort of carries that meaning, has been so completely perverted by white supremacists and ignorant fools that I tend to classify most of the people that fly it as retards. This is due to the fact that most of the people around here that fly that flag are retards. But Paul, you obviously are an exception. I have a handmade cotton replica of one of these flags hanging on the wall in my room at my parents' house, and I've gotten some comments for it, but like you said, it's too hard to explain the feelings behind it, so I usually just kinda go "....no. Stop talking" and that's the end of it.

The "stars and bars" actually started off as a naval battle flag. From there it went on to symbolize the Confederate Army. To me, it's just a way of remembering the past and how this country came to be.

    Amen to that, brother.
It's part of our history and should be flown high with pride.
Hell, do what the Americans did at Ft. McHenry: fly a flag twice the size to make sure everyone sees it!

It's idiots like her that make me want to scream, 'If you don't like it, the focking border is that way!!
You are not required to be in this country  !!

For me it represents pride, not foolish pride as many display it as, but pride in where you are from and how this land came to be. I think the main reason it is disappearing is because of how it is represented these days. People who view it in the ways we're talking about tend to give up on displaying it because of ignorance toward it from others. That is the reason I dont ride around with one tied behind my truck. Well one of the reasons anyway. :doah: Just go to the beach and MOST of the people you see with one will explain my other reasons.
Many people do not like it for one reason or another. And badass rednecks waving it in peoples faces does not help anything.
Sorry. that comment was directed toward those who view it as a racial symbol and gladly wave it at people to make them uncomfortable.

Well i got my opinion in before this thread got loose. :p:

*edit* being proud to be a redneck is ok. racism isnt cool.

people say that that flag offends and has a bad history....anyone ask the native Americans how they feel about the American flag...the squeaky wheel gets oiled...and this country has some whiney bitchy squeaky wheels. The rest of us have to work.
