I was rescently given a 1979 Custom 10 2wd and was wondering if it possible to convert it to 4wd?

It also had an inline 6 cylinder engine is it possible / legal to drop in a 454?

Sorry to tell you but it is way more trouble (cost, time, hassle) than it is worth. After it is done you would pretty much have nothing left but the body anyway. Just sell that one to buy a 4x4 (or trade, whatever) and you will be way, WAY ahead...

It is possible to transform it to a 4WD but it's a huge pain-in-the-ass, it's not really worth it unless the truck is very rare or has some kind sentimental(sp?) value. I'd just sell it and get a 4WD.

    Hey there
I was going to convert my C20 to 4 wheel drive, I looked into it and it looked like a lot of work.
I found a 79 K20 with a wasted body, blown engine and tranny. I was gonna swap the body and engine out of the 73 and put them on the 79 chasis. then all I would have needed was a tranny. $400 for the 79, but I didn't have the cash at that moment and he sold it to another guy :-(
As far as dropping a BBC in it, It'll drop right in.
What do you mean by legal?
    Are you talking about emmisions?

    Hey
I don't know what your stadards are there, ut it would basicly be the same as haveing a 6 banger in it.
If you are required to run a cat then that's what you'll have to have.
Where I'm at, there are no inspections or smog Nazis.
But if you take your rig to a shop to have work done to it, they will not remove a cat or alter a rig from what the factory put out.
If you are in the same kind of area then I would order an exhaust system from Summit and install it your self.
Back in 91 I bought a Thrush dual exhaust system for about $150, pipes only.
I think I spent $400 on that entire set up.
    That was for a 1980 C20 P/U
Before that I was running headers into glass pacs and then pipes exiting a foot behind the cab.
I had to have a 400 watt amp just to hear the stereo. LOL
Do you have a BBC to put into it?
A C10 with a Big Block can be alot of fun too.
My daily driver used to be my 73 C20 with a .040 over 454(463). Now it is my parts rig. LOL
The K5 is now my daily and all the goodies from the 73 are going to go to her.

    83 C10 + 76 K5 = pain in the @ss.
I am converting mine right now. The frames are very different as far as crossmembers. I am going to have to start from the rearend foward to line it all up. Then the front leaf springs from the radiator mount housing backward. New holes in the frame. Old mounts need to be drilled off of the 4X4 frame. This is certainly not a direct swap as I was told. But I have not given up. I am redoing the whole frame with POR-15 so it is worth my time and it is a challenge. I am swapping in a 350 from a 250.

Why not a pre runner setup both Fabtech and Procomp make lift's for a C10. Also you could slap a rear locker in it and go all sorts of places.
