should i swap my 6 lug d44 from my 74, or rebuild annd swap in an 8 lug from a 3/4 ton? the 6 lug has the the tie rod on top of the knuckles, the 3/4 doesnt. and if i did convert the 6 lug, would it be the same strength as the 3/4 ton axle?

Don't bother swapping out the axle. Just tear your 6-lugger down to the spindle (keeping the axle on the truck) and swap in the 8-lug parts from the spindle out. Presto, bigger brakes and 8 lugs!.
The only advantage to swpaping out the axlehousing entirely is if the gears in yours are bad, or if the ratio is lower in the 3/4, etc.
    Have fun.
