I'm an IT guy with a couple hundred users total, focused on about 80-90.

There's one user that always expects special attention and treatment.
So far, I've sent 3 computers home with her so she can work from home, all at the request of her superior. 2 laptops and 1 desktop. Plus 1 old desktop I gave her for her poor cousin in school or something like that.

1 machine returned to me infested with junk software from her kids.
1 machine returned to me with a battery problem, the one I suspected would be primarily used for work, hadn't been turned on since I gave it to her, in over a year (the battery was dead). I fixed it and sent it home with her, and last year requested it be brought back because she had the other machine, plus the desktop, and I was getting low on spares. Still haven't seen that one.

All the machines were older, about 2-3 years old when sent, retired from the active sales force. I NEVER send brand new equipment to a persons house because if the person's terminated the next day, I'm out brand new equipment.

Well I guess the old stuff wasn't nice enough.

She called me Monday asking me to configure a new machine "Her department got to share". She explained that this machine was just bought from Circuit city or something by her and her supervisor, and everyone in her department was all going to take it home as needed.
First off, I'm not a friggin idiot, I know everyone in her department just got a company laptop from my counterpart at other sites, and I know that they way they work it would be retarded to share a laptop.
Second off, I know she's a con artist, so I have no doubt she told her supervisor to play along with the "We'll all share it" line because she knows I'd call BS and ask her why she needs 4 machines to work from home. He's most likely forgotten he approved every other machine she's gotten, or she told him she brought them back, or he doesn't care cause he does the same things I hear from my counterpart at his sites.
Third, if it were legit to give her *another* computer to work from home, I would have control of it, and I would be able to maintain it, which means I'd yank BS software every chance I had.

Today turned out to be psychotic, so when she called me about it, I said I'm way too busy today, I'm not even on site or planning to be on site til tomorrow.
She gets on this big kick on how she needs it for work from home for the rest of the week by the time she leaves tonight, blah blah blah blah.
So I get here, AND SHE'S NOT EVEN HERE!!!
Finally she shows up, then doesn't even get in touch with me until I go back looking around her office for her, after sitting around my office here.
As she's trying to explain things to me, and I'm about to choke on her liquid lunch fumes, I just wanna get the frig outta there, get this thing done, and try to live a normal life until her kid pumps orange juice into this things keyboard and she calls me looking for a miracle.
She's so tipsy she forgets her cover story of department, and references it as her mchine for her house in her basement, etc. And she wants extra software that's not licensed. At one point, she tells me her kids will never be near this one because it's for work and they get the other ones full of junk software. Then later tells me she won't let them surf the internet a lot on it.

I look at this thing and I'm just pissed.
    A. It's a piece of crap.
    B. They didn't ask me because they know I wouldn't let them buy it consumer, which means it would be on a corporate purchase order instead of a misc slush fund. I.E. It would be looked for in an audit.

It pisses me off that they have no qualms about
    A. involving me in their little con
    and
    B. about screwing up my workday by prioritizing their little personal issue over work.

And I type all this on a non-work-related internet message board I have a personal interest in.

    :angry1: :angry1:

I should note, when this individual is not diverting company resources toward personal desires, she's a really nice lady and I get along well with her.

I would have refused to help with any of it, and avoided any complicity in the situation...

Don't you guys have sign out forms (work order form work well too) for mechines as people take them for home use. As equipment is check back in the same thing should happen and each time you should retain a copy and give one to the person that takes it or returns it. Is the company you work for so informal that you don't turn in a time card on what you worked on and for? Put the time & information on your timecard so that if she tries to keep it you have a record of working on it and when and why it was bought!

Did you ask for the other lap top and one of the desktop to be returned, since they purchased the new computer?

One sure fire way to wreck her day is send out a memo through email, send to all managers/supervisors and any employee that has equipment at home or offsite. In the memo, state that you are updating records/inventory and list all the equipment each person has,(make it one list so that everyone can see what everyone else has out) you can do it by manager or dept. if necessary. I bet when her manager sees that she has 4 machines out (knowing of course that all the other mgrs are seeing the same thing...)
that she'll be returning some equipment....

Management where I work started a "Integrity" kick. After posting a warning about non-work related "maintenance jobs" a couple of months ago, one maintenance guy and the fellow that asked were suspended one day each last week for a drift pin grinding on company time incident. Zero tolerance where I work on your kinda stuff!

So I'm getting my kids ready for bed and my cell starts ringing. I see a 718 number and think it's a guy I was dealing with for something else, so I answer it. IT'S HER!!!! She's having a problem with the wireless router I gave her. I told her "It's all configured, just take it home and plug it in." Instead, she tries to install it and configure it.
I told her I'm putting my kids to bed and after that have a lot of errands to run. Call the cable company for support.

    To answer you guys:

Yes, things are very informal. I keep equipment records of who has what until I retire a machine, but there's no official accounting of my time or individual incidents. This whole thing just sucked the second half of my day into a void.

Anything I try to do to the machine will backfire on me, cause she'll call me to fix it.

Unfortunately for me, she is tight with the our groups second in command, so I can't really do much unless I know my boss will support me. Telling her no flat out to configuring this machine wouldn't be entirely supported by my boss, and if he's not backing me, I don't have a leg to stand on with politics. I make it clear that this isn't part of my job and that I disapprove of it taking time from my job, but wtf good is that anyway. It's not like she does what everyone else in the company does and says "How much do I owe you" or "would you mind taking care of this in your free time for $xx?".

That's why I called it corporate perks, she manipulates these little gifts for herself...

Anyway, I'm over it. I'm going to chat with my boss about it tomorrow just in case my attitude was noted by anyone, he should hear the situation from the horses mouth rather than hearing "Ratch was a total a-hole about this situation that should be his job!"

Do you have your own work log. It's a good idea to have a record of when and what you work on so if something does come back you can look thru your records and remind yourself of what you did, when and how long it took you. I know that a lot of times IT doesn't have to estamate time. But it's nice when someone says you did or didn't do something and you can go back and look what you did do. Just something I've learned and may help you or someone else at their job.

This sort of thing is why I dislike most people... and really dislike the "corporate" environment.
For a while I was thinking about going to school and doing the IT-guru thing; MCSD, MCNE, Cisco CCNP, all that happy crap. But as I thought further about it, I realized I'd likely be working in the belly of the corporate beast, and there would come a time when I'd get really tired of MBA's and PhD's calling me because "It just stopped working", only to find they dumped their coffee in it, or drop-checked it from the roof of their car or SUV, and go nuts on someone who could make my life miserable very easily and have absolutely no qualms about it.

I have very little tolerance anymore for stupid people, especially the ones who are allegedly well-educated. And I have NO tolerance for allegedly-educated people who look down on non-college-graduates and treat them like they're ignorant and worthless. I dealt with that a LOT in the Marine Corps, where I didn't have a choice whether I respected that person or not.

Man , ill be honest with you, some customers a greedy pigs :haha: , if that chick could have had you scrub her floors , AND have you give her free computers, she would. I would put a stop to her, because it sound slike shes just wanting everything for free , ( because she thinks you owe it to her) ....(because thats the way she is lol ) everything for free free free, all free, and you work in her yard for free, and do the dishes for free, etc :haha: id just say, " Your time has run out , youve maxed out your warantee, or service from us, and it will cost more money to help you, because we have tio hire another person to deal exclusivly with you.", :haha:

Remember, if your free free free, your good good good,

But if yopu arent free, you are baaaad :haha: Good luck with that lol , i deal with it all the time :D :haha:
