right now in my business class we are studing a couple companies and the methods they use for their consumers, merchants and shareholders,

after learning some stuff..I love costco,

the only have a 3% profit margin on everything the sell, so if your a share holder, thats not a good thing, but if you are a consumer is rocks, they also have very good relationships with there supplyers and they dont change them that often resulting in good contract priceing.

also there empleyees are greatly payed, hell here cart pushers who are 18 start at 10.00 plus

also found aout costco uses nitrogen in there tire shops, as far as I know they are the only chain to do so, "larger molecule so it leaks less, and the tire pressure is less variable with temp changes"

just thought Id share since the nitrogen and 3% profit margin made it interesting to me,

Agreed. I learmed about walmart and its exploits in my fundamentals of marketing class...I mean I never shopped there before bc of the general idea that they were bad. But after you look at the facts it's even harder to go there. My friend in NewMex made me go to one down there, I think we got the only english speaking cashier and she was shaking so bad, and looked like she needed another hit of meth, it was sad. And you know none of the people there can actually LIVE on what they're getting paid....well maybe in a trailer with a bunch of other people who are on foodstamps and medicare  I love Costco too, never even been to a sams club, but I know Costco rocks...awesome meat :D

yeah, costco is the way to go, pay there employees good money, so they are actually willing to help you. Plus you can return anything they sell there pretty much whenever you want even without a reciept. Plus you don't even need a membership to buy alcohol there (atleast in CA) so you can get cheap alcohol too.

We don't have any Wallmarts on my side of the Bay, but I wouldn't shop there anyway. Do they carry quality, name brand stuff? I love Costco, they carry quality name brand stuff, and like was mentioned, the return policy rules. The beef jerky rules as well, I can polish off half a bag on the drive home.

I go to both. Frankly I don't care what the people working at either one get paid. Its pretty much irrelevant. Do you guys NOT go to McDonalds or BK because they people there don't get paid much? Please. I assume you don't go to movies or video stores either? gimme a break, there are a million retail jobs that don't pay jack. My wife works at Halmark.. after 5 years there, she finally got paid $8/hr... but they only raised it to that as a favor because she was looking for a new job and it would look better when she did interviews etc. She gets no benes either. I assume NONE of you walmart haters go to Hallmark to buy cards either. Where exactly DO you guys shop? 99% of reatil jobs are crap with respect to pay and benes, thats just the way it is. I guess it has something to do with the fact that ANYONE can do that kind of a job, you don't need any education or even an IQ much above 25. The whole anti-walmart thing is the biggest socialist joke I can think of. If you're so worried about how much the workers there are getting paid, feel free to tip the cashier when you go.

I agree with you 100%; if the pay sucks at Wal Mart, don't work there. Wally World is only the devil to socialists, to a capitalist it is the most successful business model ever.

    That isn't allowed :D

Seriously though. Wal-Mart is a corporation out to make money. Don't like it, don't support 'em. Costco might be great to their employees but their bottom line shows it.

In the business world there are winners and loser, and I sure do see a lot more Wal Marts than Costco's.

I worked at Walmart for a year as a truck unloader right out of high school. So my reasons for not liking them are personal. I actually thought the pay was decent for a teenager ($10/hr) seeing as my other job I was making minimum wage.
mikey_d05, you said it best. Walmart is a corporation out to make money......at all costs. They are also the largest importer of foreign goods in the world. I like the label that says "Made in the USA". But that is just my opinion :D I do have to admit, Walmart is very affordable, and very convenient.

Sorry, I should have added in that I work(ed) at Target. Retail is a bad field to be in unless you're upper management, and even then it's not the greatest. Especially since a petty flow team worker (truck unloader) like me, managed to get a supervisor fired. :D

The nearest Walmart to me just became one of their super enormous Wally World stores.

The only thing I would go there specifically for is their candles... way cheap and they burn really nice. Since I would probably never be able to find them in the new, improved store, I most likely wouldn't go there at all.

Something seems wrong about buying groceries from Walmart... :doah:

    Well,

Call me crazy but I do care what people get paid in stores like that. Can't you see past your own selfishness and see that there's a social cost to having a single mother (or any parent) having to work two or three jobs just because one can't support a family?

Oh wait.....I must be a socialist! I'm thinking about someone other than myself!

    Signed,
    Nick,
Proud member of the UFCW Local 7...and possible socialist :haha:

Haha, it's late but let me just say I'm glad I have a union job and can't be easily exploited like people at walmart. It's true, walmart is just out to make money, and if that's all life is about...then yea, go shop there, save your money, make them money, help other less fortunate people make less money...it's all good, as long as it's all about money. :p:

I'm on somewhat of a pessimistic bastard streak lately so I guess I might as well continute....

Whether or not you or I head down to Wal-Mart to do our shopping isn't gonna make a lick of difference in the overall scheme of things. If they were a small time vendor, then yeah, we could manipulate them and hurt their business if we wanted to, but as previously stated, Wal-Mart has one of the most successful business layouts ever...two guys who don't like 'em isn't gonna change that.

I've worked at Target as well and I can tell you that they treat their employees horribly also. Minimum wage at Wal-Mart? 50 cents above it at Target, the only reason I got any more than that is because I came in at 4 a.m. to unload trucks...and my shift differential expired the second the clock hit 8.

There are employers way beyond the scope of retail that treat their employees badly simply because it increases bottom line, it's a capitalist economy, there's no way around it or away from it. In the grand scheme of things, the way I spend my money isn't even a blip on the radar screen to any of the corporations I could be placing it with. Attempting to bring down Wal-Mart is the equivalent to the lets not buy gas today attempts.

In short, I don't like it, but my assets are pretty limited compared to those of the Wal family, and there isn't anything you or I can do about it. The only way to stop it would for K-Mart, Target, and Costco to adopt similar business models and gain market share, which would put that many more workers in the same situation.

Nothing would ever change if everyone had that attitude. People would never organize themselves, politicians would not topple, revolutions would not happen, it would be a sad day if everyone had an attitude like yours. :(

"Oh, please sir, do as you wish to me, for I am merely a peasant with no power over your mighty will. What will be done, be done, and by gods grace I will ascend to heaven for having suffered in this life." :doah: :doah: :doah:

I WAS a sam's club member for years. The quality of goods has dropped-off quite a bit. I did buy food and other goods...there meat department rocked!!!

But about 5 years ago...they killed there meat department when there butchers wanted to go UNION. Now all there meat is pre-packed/preservative packed tasteless crap. I found myself suffering from a major bellyache many times.

I also have bought tires, electronics you name it..
I took a tv I purchased back for exchange twice because the picture blacked-out. I finally just got my money refuded to me.

The BFG radials I bought from there, wore extremely quick. I had 4 BFG's for 3 years...I bought a set from Sam's they lasted a year.

I've heard how walmart/sam's puts pressure on there vendors to give them the lowest pricing...the vendor has no choice but to sacrafice some quality it seems.

The best part of buying from sam's is there return policy...

I wish there was a costco around these parts...I'd like to check them out.
