    could a 396 in a \'73 K5 be original??

I'm looking at a prospect K5 with a 396 big block and I'm just wondering if that could have been ordered stock or put in by someone else. Thanks for the help!

    AFAIK that wasn't offered.
Go to specifications and that has a listing for what came in what years.

Glove box door is where the options sticker is/was. If it's still there it will list the engine it came with.
I doubt it's original. I don't think GM even offered that engine by 73.

It's not my damn planet monkey boy!

396s were discontinued in the 1969 model year. From 1970-1972 the 402 was available, which was a .031" overbored 396 with open chamber heads. I have seen 1972 Blazers with factory 402s, but as for 1973 and up, the biggest engine you could get was a 350...then from 1975-1980 you could get a 400 SB in the Blazer. BTW, these 400s were all two bolt mains...the only 4 bolt main 400s were made for cars in the 1970-1972 time period.

It could be if it was a dealer installed option. Like the dealer ss cars. Back in the day remember you could special order anything you wanted. My best friends dad bought a brand new 74 k5 and got it with a factory 454. So while it is highly unlikely it is possible. you could always try to find the original owner or dealer who sold it. Just my .02.

    Subvert the accepted paradigm.

Ken pretty much nailed this on the head.

The 396's last year was '69. After that, they were 402's, just like Ken explained.

I also agree about the 402's coming from the factory in the '72 trucks. Never saw a BBC in a '73 or newer except for the 3/4 tons and 1 tons later.

I would check the numbers before you buy it, just in case it isn't a 396. Just ask solowookie......

There was never a big block installed by the factory in a '69 - '72 Blazer / JImmy. AFAIK, there was never a big block option for a Blazer/Jimmy, any year.
