Do the axles have detroits? If so they make a 'click click click' noise all the time when one wheel is spinning unlocked. What does the wear pattern look like on the gears? If you can't tell, get some gear marking grease and check the pattern before pulling stuff apart. There is a wealth of info on here and the net to help you determine if the gears are set up properly. I will also help with what I can.

the noise only starts when i let off the accelerator.when no power is being applied to the gears.
do you still think this could be the locker?

It sounds like the locker is disengaging. It is designed to unlock. This normally happens when one wheel is spinning faster than the other and there is no power being applied. Jack up both wheels and spin one of the tires forward and then quickly spin it backwards . The other one will free spin and you will here the Detroit going 'click, click, click'. I would put money on it that you are hearing the Detroit and not the gears. If you still want to inspect the gears I can help you with that.
