Help, I'm ready to replace my wore out 350 with a little HP !!! Will the Crate 350 HP pass smog in California ? I was planning on using the same stock carb to insure all smog hook ups. If not I might have a stroker 383 built but I'm leanig towards the crate for reliability. Please Help if any expirence with this issue. Some say crate is not legal in Cali some say BS !!!!!! Thanks

Probably not going to be legal, nor pass. Usually a general rule of thumb or theory is that the higher the horsepower the more smog you put out. And with you being in California, they probably have little hidden cameras installed in your house and they are watching you and waiting for you to mess with the emission and and then the smog police will come busting down your front door. Then they'll take you new motor and install it in their car so they can catch you when you try to out run them. [IMG]
Also, if your going with higher output and performance, you may not be able to use you stock carb. It might not pump enuff juice and starve the motor.

Check with the dealer. It's possible that they do have a crate motor made for us in California. This is kind of a big market to just ignore.

The literature for the 350 HO specifically says that it's for off-road use only. [IMG] This doesn't mean that someone couldn't get it to pass an emissions test. It will just take a bit of creativity. [IMG]

Which level of the "crate motor" did you use? GM sells everything from a bone stock, 200 HP to a 430 HP screamer as "crate motor" 350's. [IMG] The HO 350 that he asked about is rated at something like 350 HP.

i have put the 350 ho into my 72 k5. you could get away with using this motor if you know someone that does smog. i think that it just wouldnt pass the visual test, because it has vortec heads. if you are looking for opinions on this engine......i love it. i have had no problems with this engine and it runs strong. also if you do decide to get it let me know. if you have a 350 tranny you will need a different flexplate. as far as the stock carb,.....i dont know. i put the holley pro-jection on mine. where in cali are you?

OK, some things to think about.
I have the 350 HO, it is 330hp with votec heads.
Chevy and Edelbrock each only have one manifold for it as of 4 months ago and they are both for carb.s. If you don't plan to do some fancy drilling & poss. machining to your manifold it won't fit. For over a grand, you could go to Holleys full fuel inj. kit. The motors are listed "for off road use only" I've had mine running since Jan. and it still has a little puff when shifting (rings still seating) and I think it would be hard to clear emmisions. The motor is great but you need to find out about manifolds before you even try. I don't have emmisions so I went carb for now and may add the Holley later. You could also change the heads I belive but it would probbily mess with your warranty. Good luck
