I was just poking thru some photos on guys sites and the readers rides and came up with a question. for you guys (Steve, Depdog, Stephen etc.) with the really flexy rigs, how much does the truck protest noise wise when you flex it or ramp it? I know when I try stuff like that, the roof kinks, the springs creak, the tires rub (soon fixed :)) and the thing basically tells me to stop hurting it. I was just curious if yours make the same noises mine does, or is mine really falling apart? Just trying to get an idea of what might lie ahead for me.

    Thanks
    Mike

i know my pic isnt flexy but when i flex i have never had the roof make any noise as far as the springs you can put teflon in-between the leaf springs to stop the noise and make sure everything else has lots of grease that is saposed to have grease anyway lol some creaking and groaning is normal though

Mine doesn't creak or groan too much. About the only noise I get is the floor on the drivers side of the truck 'pops'. I guess I got a little over-exhuberant with the welder there and now it oil-cans. Time to break out the hammer [IMG]

My wifes 79 has a very interesting bongo sound that hits once when it flexes and gives a return when it unflexes. Haven't figured out where that one comes from but it sounds like a basket ball hitting the truck. I think it's the inner side wall. Gate makes lots of noise and the top creaks on it also.
The 75 is a vertible coruse of creaks and groans :) when the top is on it makes tons of noise at the windsheild header. Fenders really protest when they hit the body. The rest of the tub is pretty vocal. I haven't really wheeled it since the cage went in. not sure if I will have more or less noise haha.

Sounds like my rig is one of the more vocal ones...Hmmmm. My roof pops if i hit a rut right leaving the drive way!!. When I'm actually on the trail going over whoopty doos....oh man....you'd swear it was the end of the world!....The roof pops, the gate shifts back and forth and up and down, The top shifts(for a while i'd actually hear fiberglass on fiberglass rubbage...but that's because my tops cracked). I can feel the floor boards and my seat shifting, the pedals shifting, occassional fan shroud rubbage.....and of couse the good old tire in the front fenders grindage. I wouldn't worry about your rig Thumper......but now that i think about it maybe i should be worrying about mine!!!........nah!

I remember when I used to wheel my rig (before I noticed that my body was falling apart.. and when it wasn't winter), my passangers side quater used to sound like someone was hitting it with a baseball bat. I guess my frame flexes a bit or it's the soft stock springs. All I would hear is "WOMP, BOMP." I think my body lift also helps with the flex of the tub along with the absence of the topper.

Hey Sarah, thru the summer, my roof became so bad that it would pop and kink just over the speed bumps at McDonalds. I had a magnet cell antenna on it and it would really make it pop lots. I fixed most of the problem by poking a hole in the headliner and injecting some of theat expanding foam insulation. It cured most of it except for when I really bend things up. If yours bugs you, you can give that a shot. Mine was driving me nuts!

a little trick i've used for years to curb those various K5 noises seems to work quite well. the first step is making sure everything that needs to be is lubed up nice, and the noise isn't a cry in pain but just one of "those noises." the second step is to put in your favorite tape or cd and turn it up! the noise goes right away! :-) this is my favorite fix for those nuts that rattle around in the body b/c i only use half the bolts for the topper.....
    peace.

My top pops on the street all the time. When wheeling, you can feel the tub flex by resting you knee aganst the door. The outer sheet metal popped all the spot welds that hold it to the back of the door post. I welded it solid, it tore again. The b-pillars are torn most of the way around. When I put the hard top on for the winter, I have to get up on top and jump on it for a while to eliminate the gap. My tailpan ripped in half. My buddy's girlfriend went wheeling with me in the Dodge, and said it just wasn't the same without all the noises. I've noticed that ever since the sawzall and grinder hit the fenders, I don't even notice the new dents. In the summer, I unbutton the soft top along the tailgate when wheeling for fear of tearing the snaps out of the vinyl. If it bothers you, I agree with the "turn it up" analysis. Me, I kind of like it.

    Pete.

p.s. The following is a list of things that do not squeak, groan, rattle, pop, bang, etc. on my truck.
