My front axle is leaking gear oil. To replace the pinion seal do you have to take out the pinion gear or do you simply remove the front yoke to replace the seal? I need to replace the seal before winter comes it leaks real bad.

You just have to remove the yoke. I did this a few years ago, its not that hard, then again I had an impact.

I also used a small 2 jaw puller to get the old seal out, if I remember right. Mine was in there pretty good. But I must have done something right because it still doesn't leak[IMG]

I just did both front and rear pinion seals. I didn't have an impact wrench, so I used a very large cresent wrench to hold the yoke while loosening the pinion nut. Also mark the nut, pinion shaft and yoke with paint and retorque to those marks during assembly. I read that if you overtighten the nut you can squash the crush sleeve on the pinion shaft. Have fun.

To get the seal out, you can use a large pry bar and stick it in sideways and pry it out. This will destroy the old one but thats ok.

I appreciate all the help. I wasn't sure what I was getting into but, I know I can install the new seal without regreting anything.
