This might be slighly off topic but about what is the going rate for a Dana 44(FRONT)? And is it almost a direct bolt in in place of a 10bolt? And did any 44's or all 44's have locking hubs?

In addition to this question, do 1/2 manual hubs from a 10 bolt swap directly into a 3/4 ton (8 lug) dana 44?

(Chevy 4wd, not trying to steal your post, I'd also like to know the answer to your question but had one of my own that I thought was relevant to the topic at hand)

you can usually get one for around $200 or less no not all had locking hubs is this a 8 lug or 6? if your just getting it to be stronger than the 10 bolt its not worth the change they are only slightly stronger and i do mean slightly lol if your going from six to eight lug then id say do it and yes it will bolt right in /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not all. Depends on what design the axles were. The year break between first and second design axles escapes me right now ('75?) The first design axles use the huge external style locking hub. So aslong as you don't make a design jump, yes the hubs will crossover between 6 lug 10 bolt and 8 lug D44.

1/2 ton, 2nd design hubs Hubs swap between 10 bolt and Ford TTB D44

3/4 ton, 1st design hubs 1st design D44, external locking hub

Thanks for doing the "research" for me.
I'm thinking that my next major mod is a 14 bolt FF rear, and I figure that getting a 8 lug dana 44 at the same time, with matching gears would be the best way to go. I doubt I'd get anything older than '75 anyway.

I meant fishing up the pics for me to see. Thanks.

Dang, all this talk of h.d. axles makes me anxious. I can't wait 'til the day when I can really mash the gas because the axles won't be the weak link.
