    I went to two different part stores over the holiday weekend looking for a front axle pinion seal. One shop got the number off the old seal and he said it was a half ton axle with a 8.5" ring gear. He said it fit 73-75 Chevy Trucks. The pinion seal fit fine but I thought my axle was a Dana 44. It has a 8 lugs. Does the center section share the same ring gear size as a 10-bolt. The guys at Auto Zone went outside and said it was a Corporate front axle. I am sure it is a Dana 44 but, just wanted to post what they told me.

    So does a Dana 44 have a 8.5" ring gear or does the seal I got fit both the 10 bolt and the 44 and maybe the counterperson assummed it wrong? Any comments?

    73-75 model years had Dana 44's up front. My '74 44 has the number "44" cast right into the housing. GM started using Corporate 10-bolts up front in mid-77.

    Corp 10's didn't start until 78.....

    Look at your axle, is the pumpkin/diff round or does it look more like a stop sign?

    Round = Corp 10 Bolt
    Square(stop sign) = Dana 44

    They both have an 8.5" ring gear... Not sure of they are the same ring gear though.

    It looks like a stop sign. Either the parts people are wrong or that pinion seal number is interchangeable between a 10 bolt and a Dana 44. I also know I got the front axle from a early to mid-70's 3/4 ton truck. Thanks for the input!

    One of the "tricks" I learned about "rear"ends was the holes on either side of the cover. If you have them they are a DANA and are for the case spreader (tool).

    GM slipped in a few 10-bolt front ends towards the end of the '77 model year. At least the parts guys would always ask to confirm what front end I had when buying parts for my '77 K5. They always said they had listings for both axles for 1977.

    The guys at AutoZone don't usually know what they are talking about, especially if their computer isn't there to back it up.

    My '77 had a Dana 44 up front as well, but some of the parts books list the 10-bolt as available that year as well. I figured that when the factory ran out of 44's they started installing 10-bolts.
