Arent all Dana44 axles the same? I busted the front pass side (short one) on the weekend, and tried to get another. The guy wants all kinds of info including this mysterious number off the diff before he can get me one. I cant find any number, but thought that as long as it was a GM dana44, with 30 splines it would work... no? yes?

Thanks
Mike

What about 3/4 ton Dana44s? Would they be the same axle shaft and spline count as the 1/2T dana44s?

Thanks again.

They are all the same on GM... one thing I think he could be thinking of maybe is Jeep 44's with the two piece shafts are 19 spline or 27 spline and the once piece shafts are 30 spline..... but you don't own a Jeep so that's not an issue! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I have heard that the early D44's were different in diameter, like 72 and earlier.

Correct...72 and earlier D44's had 260 u-joints. Just make sure the u-joints are the right size...the only other difference is if it has 2 snap ring grooves or 1 (the 2 are for auto hubs I think).

The 2 groove jobs should work for both auto and manual.

Don't the 297 joint jobs swap right in place of the older 260 versions? I think the only difference is the joints/yokes, i.e. the splines and diameter is the same.

Are you sure it is a Dana 44 and not a 10 bolt? Sorry to ask, but some people get them mixed up, and it is also confusing to the parts guy when you swap a Dana 44 into a later 80's model truck.
