What is the lowest you can gear a front 10-bolt off of a '89 k5?
They start getting pretty weak below about 4.88
You can get gears into the 5'ish range, but I've heard and read that 4.56 is really as low as you want to go because the pinion starts to get pretty small. If you need to have lower gears than that for your tire size, you probably need a bigger axle.
The pinion isnt THAT small. I have pics of the 4.88s I bought for my 10 bolt in my webshots. They are under the parts for sale album if you want to see how big they really are. Keep in mind I have rather large paws. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I still have them and they are for sale BTW. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
the lowest i have ever seen is 5.13s
5.38's are available, call 4WP. Just because something is available doesn't mean it is the smartest thing to run in your rig. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Thats a fantanstic picture of the 10 bolt ring gear. No, the pinion gear isn't really small, but look at how deep the cuts are for teeth, they actually are a little deeper than the surface of the shaft, which reduces strength of the gear.
Yeah that is a good point but in all reality, how many have actually broken a pinion? And by the time you have the power to snap a pinion off you better have a 14 FF anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
