I hear ya. I'm not the most knoligable when it comes to cfm. I ran a 600cfm Holley on the hot rod with a built 383 stroker, but not sure on the needs of a mostly stock 400. I would think 625cfm would be close.

Re: Demon Carburetors? Good or Bad?

Here is some stuff that I found on holley website that might help you.

    How To Calculate CFM:
Engine size (CID) x maximum RPM / 3456 = CFM
    CFM @ 100% volumetric efficiency

    (Example: 350 CID x 6000 RPM = 2,100,000 / 3456 = 608 CFM)

Approximately 608 CFM would be required for this engine. However, most Street engines are capable of achieving only about 80% VE; a modified street engine with ported heads, headers, intake and carburetor can achieve about 85% VE; a fully modified race engine can achieve 95% or greater VE. The CFM number arrived at with this formula must be factored by this percentage.

Next, you need to decide whether a vacuum secondary or a mechanical secondary carburetor will work best for you.

As a rule of thumb, vacuum secondary carburetors work best on:
    Relatively heavy vehicles
    Street gearing
    Automatic transmission
Engines built more for low-end torque

Conversely, mechanical secondary carburetors seem to work best on:
    Relatively light vehicles
Strip gearing (4.11 or numerically higher)
    Manual transmission
Engines built more for top-end horsepower

I Run an 825 race demon on my chevelle--427 talldeck, weiand 177, 7004r and 4-56s it does 11.3 @ 128mph. We run 2 650 demons on my fathers 57 chevy---355, 8-71 weaind , m22 and 3-55s.I modified and boost refrenced the carbs on both of those. Everyother car or truck we build that is not fuel injected gets a demon. /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

well I have it installed (Thursday night) and I made a 300 mile round trip with it yesterday and it ran great. This carb is so simple that event I can tune it. It came with a nice Tuning video and every thing worked great. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
