Does anyone know how to wire a detent cable to the transmission? I got a motor from my dad for my Blazer but the detent cable was missing.

    Why the hell not?

It mounts on the passenger side of the transmission and the other end connects to the carb on the drivers side - just under the accelerator cable. That is of course you have a 700R4.

You can get a new one from NAPA for about $23 - strangely enough I picked up a new one yesterday.

Are you talking about the cable that goes from the throttle linkage to an automatic transmission?
Or are you talking about the cable (like B&amp;M's aftermarket) that is used to select the gear (floor mount mainly used in manual to auto conversions)?

If you are talking about the first item, if it is a TH350 trans it is know as a kickdown cable. This controls the 3-2 and 2-1 shift when stomping on the pedal (used for passing or quick acceleration when already moving). A separate vacuum canister is used to control shift points and firmness. On a 700-r4 tranny or 200-r4 the cable is known as a Throttle Valve cable (TV cable for short), and is used to measure the position of the throttle to increase/decrease line pressure. It also indirectly controls shift points and firmness (because of modulating the line pressure).

For a TH350 you can buy aftermarket adjustable brackets that will allow you to adjust the kickdown. On a 200 or 700r4, you have to have the precise bracket for your application so that the TV is in proper position, or otherwise the tranny could self destruct.

Let us know what tranny you have and what type of carb or F.I you are running.

I have a TH 350 tranny with a Quardajet Carb. I know how to wire the carb. I figured that out last night but I can't find where to wire it to the tranny.

If the tranny is on the truck already, the tranny install is a bitch if it is full of fluid. The easiest thing I have found is to jack up the passenger side a few inches so the fluid goes toward the drivers side. This keeps fluid from leaking all over the place. It is a two person job - at least it was easier with two people.

I just drained the fuild to change the screen and haven't filled it up yet. You said the hookup is on the passenger side of the tranny. Is it a little wire with a hook on the end?

    Why the hell not?

Now just disconnect (if not already) the cable up by the carb, then connect it down at the tranny, there should be a little hole that the z hook should go through, bolt it down and then reconnect up at the carb.

One last Question. Is this a factory style bracket or an aftermarket adjustable one? If it is a factory one, then I believe there is no adjustment (if memory serves me), but an aftermarket bracket may need to be adjusted.

<font color=purple> Just an FYI ......... A detent cable is for 350 and 400 trannies, .... And the TV cable is for 700R trannies ...... They both handle different tasks that the tranny needs done. If a TV cable is off of adjustment you could ruin your tranny and have very poor shifting characteristics. Just some info is all.

See previous posts above. Also the 400 has a switch located on the floorboard behind the gas pedal to control kickdown, NOT a cable. A 400 will have a vacuum operated modulator valve though like the 350. Just an FYI.

    Riz,
Before my other post causes a problem (after I re-read it, it has a smart-ass kind of feel to it). I don't mean it to sound that way. I have manuals here that describe each tranny and how it works. I saw your post about the 350 and 400 having a cable and just wanted to clarify for everybody. I should have put a few [IMG][IMG], etc in there but I was in a hurry to type. Sorry.
