could the little bit above average backyard mechanic do a detroit locker install on a 14bff themselves or is it better left to a pro??

The Detroit install on a 14 bolt FF is very easy unless you're doing a ratio change at the same time. There are no side shims to keep track of, no special tools needed except for a torque wrench...

Here's a link with a great description and excellent pictures for reference.

You do need to start with an open diff'd 14 bolt though.

if you dont have an impact, you may want to break loose the carrier bolts while the carrier is still in the truck. they are torqued to 100 ft-lbs or so. just a thought,

I have the G80 in my truck, so when I install a detroit I will need to install it in an open carrier. My question is that when swapping from the posi carrier to an open carrier will it be necessary to adjust the ring and pinion settings when I re-install it in the truck??

    Thanks

Yep, you are gonna need to reset the pinion depth and ring gear back lash.

If this is something you don't feel confident doing, take it to a pro. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
