I've seen it for sale in Lowes Home Improvement, I think it came in like 2 sizes like sheet metal, all I remember was I was shocked by the price.

I wouldn't get it from a home improvement center, they're way over priced when it comes to metals. Try a steel supply yard in your area, they should be much more reasonable and they may even cut it the way you want it. Look in the yellow pages under "metals". You should be able to get a pretty good price if you call around. They guys are right though, it's not cheap compared to regular sheet steel or aluminum. Just curious, what are you using it for? I want to replace the tailgate trim with some aluminum diamond-plate and CNC the GMC emblem into it, I think that would look pretty cool.

Just like somene else said. DON"T buy it at Lowes or Home Depot. That would be about the price of a 4'x8' sheet. It also can be bought in different thickness. Look up a metal supply company in your area. They will have it. Check around also some shops (welding) will have small pieces they will cut you a deal on. good luck

That "checker plate" on the doors that you saw is definitely aluminum (its shiny like that when you first get it) and it should come in just about any thickness or size you want. We get our aluminum in sheets as wide as 8 feet and as long as 20 feet.
Go to a welding shop and ask if they would cut you a deal on their 'crops'. These are the leftovers after cutting for a job. Unless you are asking for a lot of material we usually trade for beer.[IMG]
For the inside of a door like in the picture I would use 1/8th thickness.
If you want to keep the shine spray it with clearcoat. Aluminum checker is nice and shiny but it is also soft and scratches easy.
    Just my 2 bits.
