I saw a 1976 1 ton 4x4 for cheap. I called and it is about 2 hours away. The seller says he does not know much about trucks and is not sure if it is a D60 or D44 up front. Does anyone know what GM used on 1976 1 tons for the front?

    Thanks
    Tom

I'm not sure what GM used in 76 but the D60 was used from 77 on up.

    Like Rene said...K30's started in '77. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

The only way to find out what is under that '76 is to crawl under and inspect it. If it is the D60 under that '76, chances are someone swapped it in there.

Wes, did the older K30's have the heavier frame? I'd guess they did and maybe used the D44 front. Wasn't 76 the first year for the internal hubs?

No. The older frames were all the same between the 1/2 and 3/4 tons. There were no such thing as a K30 before '77, even if they had the D44. K20 was the largest truck available in 4x4.

1 tons were available before '77 as 2wd only.

The K30's frame was a new design in '77.

Internal hubs for the 3/4 ton started in mid-'77. External hubs were all the standard items before the internals.

And of course, 1/2 ton hubs have always been internal hubbed. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

    So either this K35 is a 77 not a 76 or it's a 2WD converted maybe...

    Yep, you got it.

OR, you know how when in October, they come out with the new year vehicles and it's still the current year? Like when it's '02 and the '03 vehicles come out in October? I would bet someone was looking at the sticker or plates on the door or jam and got confused. I'm not sure on this, but I have heard and seen many people get this mixed up. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

Thanks for the input guys. I will call the seller and ask him to crawl under the truck and see if the front diff has a '60' id number cast into the front of the center section. I really don't want to drive out 2 hours one way to find a D44.

Couldn't you just ask him to count the u-bolts in the front, 3=D60, 4=D44? That way the seller doesn't even have to get his shirt dirty.

I'd make the drive out of curiousity, then if it is a D60 tell him "it's really a 3/4 ton cuz the 1 tons didn't start til 77, but I'll give you $xxx for it anyways." LOL

    Giant,
That was a good suggestion about the u-bolts. I called the seller and he counted 4 u-bolts. Thanks for saving me a 2 hour drive that would have only turned up a D44.

    Thanks - Tom

You'd be surprised how many, "1 tons" have D44s. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Everyone thinks 8 lug means 1 ton.

Like my neighbor down the street with a 4wd Chevy frame in his backyard. He told me it was a, "1 ton frame." I told him I needed a frame, thinking I'd score a set of 1 ton axles.

No way, just a D44/14 FF on a K20 frame from the '70s. Nothing special.

I've looked at several K30s that have had the 60 scavanged from. They still advertise them as a true 1 ton even.

SILVER84K5, yep only 3 u-bolts. They only use one on the passenger side, then 2 bolts run through the spring plate into the diff housing. Confused the helloutta me too.
