I am talking about the 2500's with 454's. I am not sure if they all have TH400's or did some have the 4L80E?? Also what T-case do these 2500's have?

There were no 454CI engines in 4WD suburbans until 1992. The 4L80E was introduced in 1991 K2500 (4WD) with a 350 engine and a NP241 transfer case. It was available in a 1ton 4wd truck with a 454/4L80E/NP205 in 1991 (crew cab - old body style).

Maybe I'm wrong but my understanding is that the 4L80E is just an upgrade of the 700R4. 17 bolt pan vs. 16 bolt pan. Is that right?

No, its a overdrive Th400 - would be a better description.

The 4L60E is what you are thinking of as an upgrade to the 700R4. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif These two tranny's are the upgrade to the 350 tranny, but also in overdrive versions.

4L80E is the upgrade to the 400, but in overdrive version. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

How hard is it to swap in a 4L80E in place of a T400?

    Just to reaffirm...

    My '91 V2500 has the 350/4L80E/NP241 combo.

If memory serves, '91 was the only year that the "L80" was available in 73-91 Subs. Like what was stated earlier, 4X4 Subs didn't get a 454 until the body style change in '92.

Its a direct swap-in in place of the other, but...

You still need to address the computer for the 4L80E since the 400 is not computer-controlled.

Nope. But if I were you, I would ask around here and see what others have to say as there are a few who have done this swap. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
