Did search. ?\'s on 12 bolt strength *Edited*

Im sure that it has been covered on here but i serched didnt find any thing. SO what i need to know is this: Will a stock rear(unlocked) 12 bolt handle the streess of 300hp and 35's? If it will handle it being floored from a dead stop**(As in power brakeing, or dragracing or summthin. Not revvinit up and dropin it in gear........)**, without breaking i think i should be ok. What do you all think? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

P.S. geeze guys calmdown i didnt mean to start any thing with this... Is it that time of the month again or somthing? /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Neutral drops are hard on any drivetrain setups....but marv...rob and i all run 12 bolts from moab to az trails witha full detroit and zero breaks so far...but skinny pedal has to be used wisely as to much will break shizzle...

    Read the "Reply to" box...........

We are all here to learn various things. Throwing some random comment out that doesn't answer someone's questions doesn't help one bit. Maybe you should find out what the guy has planned first before making off the cuff comments. Educate the masses............. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I only Recommended a 14 bolt because he sounds like he plans to romp on it.

Re: Did search. ?\'s on 12 bolt strength

i second the get a 14 bolt comment, but thats me.i have broken 2 12 bolts so i am a little biased against them.one was locked and one was not.never broke a drive shaft but for some reason, the center section likes to come apart on me.go figure.i broke one just spinning a brodie in gravel.no problem with the 14 bolt as of yet with 2 years on it.and i like to drop the hammer on occasion./forums/images/graemlins/eek.gifprobably why the 12 bolts never survived. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I doubt that. You'd probably trash the 12 bolt in 2wd before breaking the front axle the small amount that your rig is in 4wd.

Re: Did search. ?\'s on 12 bolt strength

Mitch,14 bolts are cheap to buy,way stronger than a 12 bolt, lockers are fairly cheap as are the rest of the parts.you can convert to disk brakes real easy and later on if you decide to go with bigger tires you wont have to worry about the strengh of it.also I think that the 14's driveshaft yokes are bigger so you can run a lot heavier driveshaft..........

I think it'll hold up. It's usually a tire spinning madly then getting traction that kills them in my experience. I have an old 10 bolt shaft with twisted splines that I messed up when I blew my first set of spider gears.

I have LockRights in my 10 bolts now and I think the weak link is going to be the shafts. I mean, you can feel the shafts in the back "wind up" and then the tire lets loose. I used to worry about the carrier but I think it's going to be the shafts.

Of course, the wicked wheelhop I get now might blow universals. Hold the stupid pedal to the floor and it bounces like a bucking bronco.
