My buddy just picked up an '83 K20 with a 465/208 combo for $300. That's still going to be a 10 spline 465, right? I want to snag the tranny since mine is worn out big time. I'm already snagging the pedal bracket since I don't have the right one.

My understanding is all 208 and 241 465's are long 32 spline.

Got two in the garage that agree with me.

I went with the newer 32 spline 205 so I could eliminate as much drivetrain "slop" as possible. The 10 spline coupler is a POS IMO. It works fine in normal use, but it still wears considerably.

That's fine and dandy, but I don't have a 32 spline 205, (nor do I have the parts to change it over) I have a 10 spline one.

I have never heard of a 10 spline 208 either, but being as this thing is older than when all 465s became 32 spline, I just wasn't sure.

My 81 Jimmy came stock with a 465/208. Tranny was 32 spline long...prolly the first year for that.

For the cost of changing a 32 spline 465 over to 10 spline, (gaskets/seals, any worn stuff you WILL see when both trannies come apart for the swap) and all the time involved, going with the better 32 spline 205 setup will start to make sense to you. At least it did to me.

If you know you'll just rip both trannies apart and replace not one piece, then go for the 10 spline swap. I know I'm not unique in insisting that when stuff goes together, it's all correct, or I don't do it. No reason to put a bad part in the truck that will have to be fixed again. (but I can live in bliss if I don't know theres something wrong!)

Just putting it on the table as an option you may not have considered. If you keep your eyes open, a 32 spline 205 can be had for $2-300 I'm sure.

Oh trust me, if I can get this 465 for free, I'm going to take it!! I will just hang onto it until I can find the right 205 for it laying in the junkyard and I'll be good to go. The only problem is that I won't be able to use it right now.

87SM465NP208 checked out my rig today and noticed a crack in my frame where the Z bar mounts. I know this is a popular thing but I never realized I'd have it.

reminds me of a hair cut i got once
32 spline naturally has a larger hole in the t case then does the 27 or 10 spline you can switch the 10 and 27 around but ya cant switch the 32 around with out changing the diameter of the hole in the case that accepts the respective input yoke
    hope this makes sense
and most any thing can be done with enough time and $$$

I wouldn't switch a case. It's too easy to get the right case around here.

    Tim-

Might I suggest you use a little more finesse when you speak? Ever notice how harsh your tone is? Or how many times you discard the opinions of the very people you continue to ask for help - despite the fact that you seem to know everything? I told you I was going to work on your crappy attitude. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was basically simply referencing that this was an old post and that I was no longer interested. R72K5 had PM'ed me reguarding a 32 spline 465. My friend still has it and I shot him a price on it and everything.
