I found a 79-80 GMC K35 diesel and was wondering what the likely gear ratio it would have (couldn't find any info on the door or glovebox although there was something in the glovebox talking about camper wieghts). I was hoping 4.56's but seeing as how diesels turn less RPM's I was thinking it is probably a 3.73 or 4.10 ratio. Is there any diesels that came with 4.56's stock?

    My 86K30 came with TH400/NP205 and 4:56's.

Are you looking at buying this truck? Is it the old 5.7L diesel?

Actually I might take it for the frame, axles, and hydroboost. The body is toast and the engine (was diesel then swapped to gas), tranny, and t-case were removed. I want to use the axles as is and would like 4.56's and was wondering what my chances were. I know diesels turn less RPMs so I thought they would have less chance of having such a high ratio.

The CUCV have always a 4.56 ratio, but they were build 1984 and later, and they runs only 55 mls. with an acceptably loudness.

What diesel engine did this truck have? The 6.2L wasn't introduced until 1982, and I believe that the 5.7L was only offered in 10 series trucks.

The 6.2L I was referring to was the signature of azblazer. I asked if he had a diesel, and then I saw his sig. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

To be honest I don't know what the truck originally came with (other than knowing it was a diesel). I'm not very knowledgeable on diesels or which years had which.

    That's why I was asking. I don't believe GM made a K35 with a diesel engine in 79-80. I was just curious.
