I'm changing the brakes on my front axle and when I took the rotor off I noticed some rust on some type of shield?!? Do I need to replace the part or can I just treat it and let it be.

why don't ya just loose the shield? there was a debate on this a while ago, and everybody seemed to agree that all they did is collect mud...

I removed both of mine, and when I did my rear disk conversion in the back I never put them on... no problems yet, and that was about 4,000 miles ago.

Well some run a thick sheild that's part of the backing plate that hold the caliper. Those you will need. Sand it and paint it. it's just to keep crud from kicking up against the disc's Problem is it does trap dirt if you go through deep mud.

I'm keeping the thick part, it wasn't rusted to bad... I just sanded the surface rust off... on the other side (not the pic) there was barely anything left of the small part on the other side. Thanks for the help ya'll.

Yeah toos the tin part if it's that bad. Mine are ALL thick. doesn't have the caliper bracket with the tin spot welded to it. It's all one stamping.
