Folks, I have been struggling with an extremely annoying rattling noise on the passenger side body panel. Something is loose in the fender right behind my passenger door in between the outer panel and inner panel. Does anyone know what is in there? I hear the rattling when I drive. It sounds like something is loose but I can't get to it without having to cut a hole in the inner panel or something. My interior is completely gutted right now, so I can maybe cut a hole in the inner metal panel to take a look in there, but it could be anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone ever seen what is in there? Please help!!!!

I've seen loose panel screws stuck in those places and I have also seen rocks. Look around for a drainage hole somewhere. If there is a hole, I bet it is a rock. In my case, I had a broken off panel screw inside.

Thanks, Chris. It has progressively gotten worse. I thought it might have been the caged nuts that hold the hard top on (I took my top off), but its not that. It just keeps rattling and rattling. You don't understand what a pain this is...

Well, that's just it. The interior is gutted and the noise is coming from between the left outer fender and inner panel. The only way I can see finding the noise is by cutting a hole in the inner panel.

There are drain holes but they get plugged up with mud and leaves etc. that come in through the holes on the inside of the fender. Best thing would be to take the fenders off and wash them out. That's a big job though and there's a hell of a lot more bolts hlolding that sucker on than you might think.

Well, it looks like I'm gonna have to start cutting. Now I just have to figure out where! Any other ideas would be appreciated.

You might also want to check the topper bolts. The bolts thread in to a threaded insert in side the sheetmetal andsometimes can break loose and start rattling if the bolt is missing/loose, the topper is off, or if someone threaded the screw into something else.
