I just got done fixing ratpack7's frame at the steering box on his.....85? blazer. It was broke in half. We ar going to get it braced too. I seen ORD makes a kit... Does anyone else? Do I really need it for first gen? A few in the garage say no. WHY?

First gens aren't nearly as common as the second gen problem

Did your truck come w/ the reinforcing plate? Its hard to tell on the pics. My 71 has one on it...I just assumed they all did. If they didn't come on them all than what years?

Both my trucks have a reinforcement plate riveted in behind the steering gearbox (inside frame) - maybe that's why...

Greg72 did a survey on this. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my recollection that the reinforcing plate was added in the '71s and '72s.

guess I'll have to look and see. What does it look like? where can I get a kit if it doesn't?

It's a reinforcing plate inside the frame rail behind the steering gearbox.... The effect is "double" frame thickness...

My 70 has a stock reinforcement plate. I know from experience that the 2nd gen's have a real problem in that area, no problem with my 70 though.

I have sheared all of the bolts off that hold the box to the frame on my 72..... lucky for me I was only backing out of the driveway:)

I'll have to look. How did you break the 4 bolts on the steering box? Grade 5 at least right?

The bolts are Grade 8 from the factory and I wouldn't go any lower. The bolts just fatigue over time and break...I had the same thing happen on my 77 ford van...only when 2 of the bolts broke the 3rd one broke off the ear on the box.
