Hey thanks for passin this on Shawn!
We as customers NEED this type of valuable info!
I anyone ever has a bad or good experiance with a company please share it here! I for one like to hear this type of stuff, it better prepares me for future purchases!

I almost lost a 1000 bucks once tring to get a loan from an add in our local newspaper. Turned out to be one of thoes boiler room phone scams. The lesson learned here was to NEVER give ANY money upfront to get money/credit!!!

Well Here is the deal...it may not be Rockcrawler or one of their people that did this. It may have been intercepted by a hacker, their site may have been hacked. They do need to be made aware of it and they may well try to make good on it as well as they may be able to correct any security holes in their web site. But thanks for the warning because we know there is a security issue with this company wether it be somebody at the company that has done this is yet to be seen.

Before you buy, you need to make sure the transaction is sucure, most sites will advertise this somewhere along the buying process. I would like to let all of you know that you are safe to purchase things from the merchandise page at ColoradoK5.com, all transactions are made through CCnow which is an independent secure Internet commerace company, in fact I don't even get to see your credit card number. CCnow also has a toll free number for their customer service center (you will see this when you buy). This service costs me a little but is worth the security for you and me and to date not one problem.

Thank You

Ok everyone....
Are you sure it wasn't someone who was working for rockcrawler.com? I work at a catalog fulfillment center and even though our transactions are secure any one who works for the company has access to the credit card information simply by viewing your order. We had an incidence a while back where someone did steal a credit card #, and needless to say he got caught, fired, and probably is in prison. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you purchase anything at all with a credit card, secure or unsecure there is a possibility that someone could use your card #.

One more thing dont ever buy something with your ATM card over the net. If someone does steel your #'s the bank cant do any thing about it. You are s#@t out of luck. The hacker will take all your money. If threw a credit Card the company will work with you.

Re: Don\'t buy from rockcrawler.com

If it's not a secure server... all it takes is a port monitor to monitor the server and see who is pulling up what pages... once the order form is called on you use another readily available program (if you know where to look) to grab information being fed to the server... Well this is the simplified way this is done... And dont ask me how to do it, or ask for the programs... I dont support this...
JUST BE CAREFULL...... It is easy... Make sure it's a "SSL" connection... Period!!!

Um... yes officer I know it's too big...

it's sooo nice to have a computer that doesn't exist,,hehehe

actually if you want to see just how secure your home puter is then go herehttp://www.grc.com and click on the "shield's up" and then click on it again at the next page...you can also do a port scan too..even if you have a firewall i still recomend doing this,,,you'll be suprised as to the outcome as i was....

Re: Reply from Rockcrawler.com

Hey Chris. Thanks so much for bringing these threads to my attention (and completely ruining my morning, thank you). My wife just got off the phone with "Smith" who made the original post, claiming the fraudulent charges. First, let me say that, of course, we wouldn't do something like this. Rockcrawler.com is a sole proprietorship and is run by myself with the help of my wife. We have staff-writers around the country, but the final coding of every single page and every order we run through our 4x4rockshop site is handled by myself and/or my wife. There are no employees, let alone disgruntled ones! I have been in business since 1990 and RC has been online since 1997. We have had one charge-back in all that time and that was due to an error at Equifax, who actually processes the cards (called a Gateway). They found the error and immediately credited the customer back. This is the first and hopefully final time that anything like the above post happened. Obviously, I am mortified. Several days after Smith's card was stolen, our magazine site was hacked. (The rockshop is hosted on a different, secure server). They did nothing but put a rude note on our main page, which we discovered soon after. The logs show they did not touch anything else or any other server. Regardless, we did change the way that we process cards in the Rockshop, to ensure more security and at that time we also removed all old orders from the database. As some of you may know, ANY server with ANY amount of firewall is susceptible to a hack. Just ask Microsoft, Egghead or Amazon.

I assure all of you, that we are a legitimate, very small business, and this concerns us very much. As the Network Solutions Whois data above shows, the card was used by someone in India. I will be contacting the Birmingham branch of the FBI this morning to pass on all of this information to them and hopefully find the culprate.

I urge any of you to call me personally if you have concerns or questions. We pride ourselves on handling all orders ourselves and my wife remembers each and every name of our customers. Please feel free to give me a call. The best way is by cell phone at 205.613.7280.

Re: Reply from Rockcrawler.com

Glad to hear your working things out. I have many friends that have small sites and a few have run into issues where information was intercepted as it sounds like it was on your site.
It sounds like you have taken steps to atempt to stop this from happing in the future. People do need to be aware that 9 out of 10 times when something like this happens the operator of the site may not be aware of what has transpired. I really feel that this was not handled in the proper manner and that the person who had the original problem should have contacted you as soon as he found a problem. Yes I feel that a post of a heads up was warranted to let people be aware that there was a security breech and to check for any fradulent charges. Regardless you were not made aware of the issue in a timely manner.
For the rest...I'm not sure of the validity of the ATM card not being protected. Mine has a Visa lable on it and I was under the impression that I was covered against fradulent charges just like a credit card but I will be contacting my bank and verifing that. I recomend you do the same.

Grim, if someone accesses your ATM/ Debit card account and drains your account, the bank is not liable for the funds! Only credit cards have protection. Use it with extreme care.

Hey Mike-
Sorry about the post but I was passing what I saw on ORC. I probably should of called to find what exactly is going on but I just don't have time these days to investigate the situation. I'm also glad you're trying to make things good. Like you said, any site can be hacked so you just never know. What sucks is I doubt this guy will never get caught since he's in another country. Take care.
