This is from Chevy high performance mag Sept 1999
They tested the base new crate 350 from GM
They got it from Scoggin Dickey in Lubbock
    Web site www.scoggindickey.com

Advertised as 8.1 to 1 but measure to be 8.4 to 1 compression.
Stock cam waranty not affected by external add ons.

    Round 1
Stcok Q jet manifold and stock Q jet carb
Stock cast iron exhaust manifolds to 2.5" duals with turbo style mufflers
Tatal advance set to 34 degrees and 92 octane pump gas.
    peak TQ 324 at 3700
    Peak HP 239 at 4100

    Round 2
Same as above but add hooker header with 1 and 5/8 primary tubes
No rejetting of stock carb or timing change.
Peak TQ 349 at 3600 RPM
Peak HP 255 at 4400 RPM

    Round 3
add an Edelbrock preformer Intake Manifold
All else same as 2 above
    No jet or timing change
Peak TQ 350 at 3600 RPM
Peak HP 265 at 4300 RPM

Gives some real world numbers for that basic crate motor.

Thanks for the info turbo. I pretty much got the Round 3, but take out the hooker headers and add in Flowtech Afterburners. Anyways, now I know where my GM crate stands.
    Thanks.

Well the mag has complete numbers TK and HP vs RPM.
    You pick what you want.
Here in the real world engine HP is done at peak and honest guys quote what RPM produced the peak.

Perhaps you pefer chevy parts guy rectal pluck but for me real world means an off the shelf no speical prep engine hooked to a dyno not just a wag.

But for you wag guys sorry I bothered.

Hold up, I think your missing the point !
    Thanks for posting the #'s
To me real world 4X4 have to have bottom end toque.
If you only post at one rpm, and the peak, whats that tell us about the bottom end ?

Pick an RPM or 2 and tonight I'll post the numbers for those cases at your desired RPM.
Of course case one will likly be marginally highest at low RPMs.
But when some one asks what HP is the base crate engine rated at that is commonly taken as peak HP not low RPM HP.

Ok, I see you point about the crete engine HP, but I sure hope
your not spinng them at 3600rpms off-road. or on the freeway,
because they will not last very long at that rate.
If on the other hand you 4X4 in the 1500-2500 rpm range most of the time
and have more low end torque in motor A then motor B
this is real world to me.

And if your in a mud hole spinning at say 4500 rpms, and going nowhere(traction limited)
what good does 300 HP vs 350 HP do for you ?
