I'm painting the truck up this spring and I'll probably do it one piece at a time. You know like take off the fender off one of the old junkers in the yard and use that as temporay so I can still drive it and paint it mine. I'd like to take off the K5 emblems of the fenders because the paint has flaked off to bare metal around them and I want a smooth paint job. How do you get these on and off with out breaking them. I'd want to use the original mounting system and not tape.

There are studs that are protruding out of the back of the emblem and they go through the fender and then on the other side of the fender is a thin metal nut. The stud and nut have no threads, the nut is a thin piece of metal that gouges into the emlem studs and holds it on.
You need to get up in there and remove the thin metal nut(it does hav the shape of a nut.
Just hang oonto the nuts and reassemble when it is time.

You have to be VERY gentle removing those. The emblem is made of some junk pot metal and those studs break pretty easily. Especially after years of exposure to salt. [IMG] I've seen new emblems for sale somewhere, I just can't remember where!

I bought new ones at the dealer, the most expensive ones are the emblems by the tailights on the rear corner fender.

If the day comes that I actually do get around to painting mine, I'm thinking about just welding the emblem holes closed and leaving the emblems off. They just seem to be a place to trap moisture and create rust. [IMG] You could always have something painted on in their place. Many years ago I saw a Gen-I K5 that was done this way. Instead of the emblem, there was a painted logo that said "Ballzer". [IMG]
