It's a 383 and the block will be chevy orange. It'll have chrome valve covers and an edelbrock intake.

I would like to suggest going with aluminum valve covers instead of chrome, so they will work as good as they look. [IMG] (aluminum covers help by cooling the oil, chrome retains heat)

Dude, you hear of the tab key? Please don't yell like that :)

Personally, I like the chevy orange for the engine, brackets and the pan with the pulleys black, alum water pump and intake and if you must have chome, then put on them chrome valve covers. Here is a shot of my engine as it sits now:

Sorry it isnt the greates pic. I dont have the alum water pump but the intake is alum and the valve covers are chrome.

I've always been a fan of Chevy orange for the block and water pump, black for the pulleys, and an aftermarket oil pan. Otherwise go with orange for the oil pan. Much easier to touch up.

My oil pan came red from Moroso, so I left it that way.

I painted everything satin black. except the moroso pan. I left that orange. I would also use aluminum valve covers. They don't leak! the chrome steel always warp and leak. I HATE oil leaks.

your right. I don't understand the jeep thing!

My ideal engine color is STOCK. The stock color for whatever year the vehicle is. I love it when the motors are built and painted a stock color. It fools other people to thinking you have a stock motor! [IMG] Around here, everybody is always trying to fool and out do the other by building 'sleeper' motors! My '85 454 looks all stock and is painted black. I know, I know, but it came that way when I bought it. If you opened the hood and took one look at it, you would think that thats the way it came off the assembly line!!! Its also very clean (when I wash it) and it does have several aftermarket items on it due to a rebuild by the previous owner. It sure is a sleeper alright!! [IMG] It even has the stock air cleaner and snorkle still hooked up to the radiator support. The only thing that gives it away when you look at it is the headers. [IMG]

The new motors come black but I go for tradition....
Chevy orange all the way. Chrome valve covers and anything else does NOT leak if you spray the gaskets with High Tack. Orange pan with an extra coat of permatex high temp. orange silicone around the already sealed and painted pan. Black brackets unless you get them in chrome. I sprayed my manifold with VHT high temp clear engine enamel so it cleans right up when it gets dirty.
Here is my motor when I was putting it in..sorry the picture doesn't due it justice.

What fuel injection set up is that on the motor? Appears to be the Accel system. Still a bad ass looking motor! [IMG]

Thanks, Wes! You are right; it is the Accel "Stealth" system (stupid name [IMG] though). It's their low rpm torque system. However, I'm not using their ECU. I like SpeedPro's (now TCI's, since they bought them out) computer much better. It allows wide-band O2 sensor for closed-loop running, and controls ignition timing, IAC motor, and cooling fans, too. Takes a little getting used to, but I've got it down pretty good now. I did the tuning on my friend's '69 Camaro with the same ECU setup, and it runs real sweet.

BTW, the Camaro is worth a look, if you have the time http://www.pro-touring.com/featured_cars/Camaro/craig_boones_69_camaro/craig_boone_001.htm.

Ohhhh that's sweet looking!
On my wifes 79 it was a rebuild and the color was the Pontiac blue they used in the 60's and early 70's. Well I was doing some major work and had the accesories off and wanted to paint it. None of the local shops had the correct color of Poncho. I'm a Poncho guy also so the Pontiac blue didn't bother me one bit. It however tore up a Chevy head buddy of mine LOL. He kept telling me I need to get it back to Chevy orange. Well I actuly like the blue Ford uses and the shops had that in stock. Well Ford Blue it got...looked good. Has Blue Moroso Wire holders with Chrome brackets all spiffied up and clean. Took it over to my buds house and asked him to help me with a problem I was having (He's a top notch wrench and when I have an issue he's who I go see). He lifts the hood see's the blue and slamed the hood shut and said "Damnit I see the problem...somebody dumped a crappy Ferd engine in your Chevy!" He hated it LOL. He's alright with the Black Crate in it now.

It's not my damn planet monkey boy!

Too funny! [IMG] My buddy with the Camaro is the same way. Absolutely will not wrench on a Ford or Mopar. And no metric fasteners allowed. [IMG][IMG] He'll drill them out, retap, and install non-metric fasteners every time. It's like an obsession. Cracks me up!

Take a look at those valve covers on the Camaro in 502Burban's link. Those are the valve covers I was going to suggest. They give the engine a no-frills, all business look. I love them. Only thing is that Classic Industries carries them for $269 each!!! D'oh!
