I sometimes hang out on the boards at http://www.chevelles.com. That is the best site that I have found for general Chevy engine info.

http://www.chevymania.com This is a GREAT site on chevy engines. Sometimes their server seems to be down, but once you get there, it's worth it.

Are 383s available to buy as a complete motor, or are they all custom built?

There will be a Crate engine coming out in these days ready for install and with plenty of torque. Check out http://www.sdpc2000.com.
