Okay so the next major undertaking for "puke" is to replace the engine. We wont be doing this till spring, BUT with two little monsters, and a house, I need to start planning now. Currently I have the 305, I want a 454, hub thinks a 400 will do everything I want or need it to do. Because I have until spring -- money wont be the factor-- if you could put any engine in your rig, what would it be??? remember, I don't go off road... so its more for "show" thanks!

Going 454 is costly due to engine costs, all new brackets for power steering, alternator, and A/C if you have it. New exhaust system, radiator eventually, and you end up with fuel economy that puts a grin on an Arab. If you were going to really need the power, go for it, but for show, verrrry costly.
Stick to a 383 or 400 if you want street usable power and economy. Figure $1000 less than a BB454 to go small block power.

LT1 or LS1 out of a vette/camaro. Since you are street only this will be perfect.
The LT1 has a sensitive distributor so shouldn't be wheeled or washed.

chevy performance is putting alot of horses into thier crate 350s. keep some kind of fuel eff. and still be able to get up around 500 ponies.

If money is not a factor, then why not the 502 fuel injected crate engine? You can get all the brackets from ebay, and most of the rest from summit racing.

The only problem you'll find here is if you have a weak tranny or 10 bolt axles, it'll drown you with more expenses every time.

Sorry but I'd go BIG BLOCK!
If it's not a daliy driver, who cares about gas mileage.
I really miss my big blocks. Nothing like a motor that shakes the ground for show. 454 or maybe a fuel injected 502?
I've had some bad a$$ small blocks but then there is a BB. A whole nother class. I'd love to have a street blazer with a blown 454. Bet you could break some necks. Oh, don't forget to go one-ton first!

Ramjet 350, VROOOM! Fuel injected and ready to run, for about $4,500, ouch! Well actually GM has a Vortec motor that puts out 330 horses right out of the box for $2,000. A complete version of that runs $3,000. A 454 is way too much of money eater to be any good. Parts are expensive, all your stuff needs to be swapped (tranny, doo dads) and horrible mileage. A 400 is a good motor but the blocks are getting rare and that motor is prone to cooling problems. I'd just build your own vortec 350 so you can have some fun and brag.

all of your reasons for not going with the 454 are the SAME as the old man's. $$$$ I think he is a little worried about the check book. LOL! Luckily for me, the 305 still has life in it. My original dream was the 502 crate, but he shot that down. He wants me to go with the 400. Even offered to do most of the work (what a guy). I figured him out however, he just wants to be the one in the drivers seat. The guy I got the blazer from has a 400, just waiting for a home. Luckily I have some time to plan, or save for that matter. I put hub's lift on the back burner for him. so nice of me! He has had the rancho 4" for over a year now in the garage, cant find anyone to do it, that has some sort of idea what they are doing. so I figure might as well spend more money on the Blazer!!

I think it would be real hard to beat a crate motor, you can't beat a 330HP for $2200.00 and it looks good. My dad just put one in his pro street s-10 and I'm wishing I would have gone that route because I will have about $1600.00 in my motor, maybe a few more HP but I won't have a 12 month warranty!
Good Luck!

My vote is for an LS1 if you are going for street performance, mileage and allot of show. If money isn't the factor, I'd put my money there!!!!! That is my next powerplant!!

i would go with a 454 out of a late model GM truck. pay for the motor from GM dealership, or go to a wrecking yard. then the wiring harness and a few other tidbits. and off you go. well a computer or the trans to go with it too. but anyway. you dont need to do much to a stock EFI BB. but you can if you want to.

To be truthful why don'y you get a modified 350 with some good heads like Brodix or AFR's? From reading your posts and whatnot and if you don't plan to offroad it or Tow stuff why bother w/ a big cube engine for a daily driver? Do you enjoy buying more gas? A 383 and 400 both will tend to drink a bit more gas but really overall it depends of the entire setup you run. You also may want to think about going FI (TPI) or getting the Edelbrock MPI conversion. Those would better your drivability, give you more power, and milage too.

Build a small block 415. 500 hp 500flb torque from a motor that weighs 500 lb. Total winning combo, big block power in a small package. Check out the possibilities at http://www.speedomotive.com, I did!
