    I have a 82 with a 305 in it it has 105,000 miles on it. I just bought the truck. the engine smokes from the time I start until I shut it off! is it the valves or is it the rings? do I need to replace with a 350 or fork out the dough to rebuild?

    Need more info!

    what color smoke?

    white=coolant (i.e. blown head gasket)

    gray/blue= oil (i.e. bad vlave guides, blow buy on the rings...)

    black= really rich mixture (i.e. really really fouled up carb or fuel injection)

    (grayish white could also be a bad diaphram on an automatic transmission. should only be letting vacume from the engine through not tranny fluid the other way.)

    Sparky

    When all else fails... Check the blinker fluid.

    <font color=purple> Have you tried getting it on the nicotene patch ? I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. It definately depends on the color of the smoke as was posted above .......... knowing that would help a bunch.

    with that many miles Id imagine the rings are shot and the valves are pobably leaking past the umbrella seals, course just a guess, do a compression check then shoot oil into the cylinder again, if the compressions shoots way up the rings are shot, if the compressions stays the same the valves are shot,, course Im just guessing,,

    Never been stuck, just temporarily delayed.

    I just rebuilt my motor that had 170,000+ miles on it and it only smoked on start up. A guy put in Speed Pro pistons before I bought it and don't know how many miles ago that was. Now my truck still smokes on startup even with reman heads so are the rings going on it? Or could it just be burnin off junk inside the new headers and exhaust pipes?

    Smoke on start up usually is cracked or brittle umbrella seals.
