Had the same problem once. Turned out to be the spark plug cables that were rotten.

Does it sound like something is loose? Or is it a popping caused by the engine, as in backfire? If it's a backfire, it could be some ignition problem like bad timing.

    Hope this helps.

Hey man mine does the same thing. I replaced all the wires and distrib. cap yad yad yad. Still did the same thing. But the check engine light was coming on at the same time. So I scanned the codes and it came up as the 02 sensor. Which I have not replaced yet because my exhaust is in such bad shape. But if your light is not coming on than maybe the timing is off a little bit. One little 1/16" can make a big difference. Hope this helped. Later LittleJimmy.....

I know my timing is correct, i have had it set many of times recently. Also, this past summer replaced wires, and the whole distributer. Im prety sure i dont have an o2 sensor as well. My choke is still acting up some and i cant get thatproblem fixed. Could this be the reason for it? Or could it be spark plugs? ONe last idea..... could my exhaust be clogged somewhere?

are you running glasspacks? I've heard it's common to have a popping sound when it comes down (in the exhaust, not the engine). I had glasspacks on a truck and they did that.
