I've got the factory dual battery setup in my 81 K5. I just put on my new front bumper and my Warn 9500ti winch 2 weeks ago. I got stuck in a bog on the way down from hunting cabin last Sunday. Winch is run to spare battery and and with engine running it ran down fast. Is the factory spare battery setup more of a trickle charge for running accessories with truck off like a pickup truck with a camper shell? The battery ran down fast under load. I had to run jumpers from the starting battery and then the winch pulled me right out. Factory setup has small wires (10guage?) running from battery to relay, to junction box etc.

It sounds like it is not getting charged. Especially if it worked when jumped to starting battery. Not sure of stock dual bat setup, but check relay and junction box. Also check wires and connections for corrosion. Or the battery could just be bad. 10 ga charge wire should be fine, that can handle alot of current. I use that on my boat and never have a problem when winching the anchor or charging. My K5 is next for the same setup.

Should I look for a high amp altenator? I think factory setup was about 60 amps.

Factory non ac truck is 63 amps, ac truck is 78.

There's no such thing as factory dual batteries on a gasoline powered rig AFAIK.
