What did a factory towing package in the late 80's K5 include?
I have an '89 Silverado which I use to tow an 18' ski boat.

I don't know for sure, but every "towing package" K5 I have seen looks more dealer installed than factory. Most of the time I would think 3 leaf fronts, 6 leaf rears would be pretty standard, as well as the wiring from either the fuse panel up front, or a joint (maybe even a splice) for the trailer lights. The hitch I have is a Class 3, but no way to prove if mine came like that or not. Anyone that suspects a "trailer package" maybe should check the RPO's in the glovebox and see what they have.

Tranny cooler, oil cooler, HD radiator (4 core or something like that). I can pull ALL the codes of mine if you need.
I have the GM Production Options book from 1990 also. I should fax it to someone that can scan it and post.....

My 90 has a class 3 hitch, and a wiring harness that plugs into the taillight harnesses. There are supposed to be trany and oil coolers, but I have never seen the tranny cooler, the only one on there from the factory was the one in the radiator, and there is a small oil cooler. Pkg. may have included better shocks....

Along with the hitch, wiring harness, oil cooler, transmission cooler, bigger radiator, were 3.73 or 4.11 gears. The oil cooler is located on the far right,(drivers side) of the radiator.

I actually bought a factory transmission cooler for my truck, but it cost me an arm and a leg ($135 at the time) and wasn't anything special. Basically just like any other aftermarket cooler, but with brackets made to bolt directly to the truck. Other than that, it was the same old "cut the tranny line, splice it in, and use hose clamps to connect everything" Rip off for $135!

Danger...Danger Will Robinson! The factory hitch that was installed on my 83 Blazer sheared off the frame (not the frames fault) and left our boat in the street. Ever since then I've stayed away from factory towing packages and gone to an aftermarket hitch.

How much did the boat weigh?

As far as I can tell, the "factory" hitches are all made by the same makers as aftermarket anyway!

On mine, the awesome GM factory or the guy ordering it decided it would be a good idea to put 3.42's in a truck with a towing package.....

I bought my '89 new off the lot. It has the factory towing package that includes a wiring harness for trailer lites and a heavy red and blue wire (I think one is for electric brakes and the other may be aux 12v power). All the wires are coiled under the rear bumper and taped up with no connectors on them. Also included in the package was the aux oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator. The transmission cooler is located inside the radiator which is three pass and it has 3.42 gears and five leaf rear springs. I don't recall what class the hitch is, but there are two grade 5 bolts on each side holding it in. Mine's currently sitting on the back porch as I think I'm going to go with an SEC bumper that has the hitch built in, but if I do re-use it I'll replace the hardware with grade 8. I don't remember what else, if anything, may have been included may have been included with the trailer towing package.

Most of the dealer installed trailer packages I've seen included the hitch and a plug-in or crimp-on wiring harness but not the aux oil cooler.

    Hope this helps.

My 88, has a TP but does not include a tranny cooler. It has Oil cooler, and a receiver.
