Well, it's time for a inspection this month and I get a exhaust leak at the manifolds. Kinda half-assed fixed that last night. Take it in today and it fails cause it ain't got no cats(it passed wiith out them before, but I haven't had it inspected with glasspacks) So, I'm not mad about putting cats on(bound to happen sooner or later) it's that they took my inspection sticker off because they were scared that if I got caught without cats they(authorities) would see the Jack's New Concept Auto(never go to them BTW) on the sticker and fine them for passing me without cats. So now I can't drive the damn thing for the rest of the month which I legally could have if it still had the sticker, cause they took it off! [IMG][IMG][IMG] I didn't think anything of it because he said that he knew the dude at Midas(down the street) would give me a good deal on cats(I thought good deal was around 200). Turns out that Midas wants around 500 just for two cats! 157 a peice and labor to get them on there(isn't enough room as is so they would have to move the mufflers back)! so now I'm pissed because I don't have that kind of cash right now and I have no K5 to drive! I will have some choice words with them tommorrow(read: raise hell!) I think they had to come up with a reason for the sticker being off because the guy doing the inspection had passed it, took off the old one, and was writing out a new one but then the owner came out and talked to him and then came and talked to me. Just had to vent..........

It wasn't smog, it was just a visual inspection and yes if the damn owner had been somewhere's else(preferably being hit by a bus) I would have a inspection sticker on my windshield [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

just a thought, that $500 is awful steap, you can get performace cat's from summit for like $120 or so maybe less, and find some po duck muffler shop to install them and you should be out a lot less money or even install them yourself if you got a welder

PM'ed you with a possible solution.
You could always threaten the first place with turning them into DPS for allowing you to be inspected the first time. They keep records (I've asked before). If it's true, they'll get in a heap of trouble and possibly lose their inpsection liscense.
However, you could still have trouble. I believe according to the Clean Air Act, putting duals on a factory single exhaust can be considered tampering. A Californian could refute this, since they got it the roughest.

Huh! I always thought that all trucks w/Texas plates were REQUIRED to have dual exhaust w/glass packs and 2" pipes. j/k

I tried to get dual cats installed here in Colorado and they wouldn't do it. EPA says it, the cat, doesn't get hot enough to activate with only one exhaust going into it. Like the cat is still working on my '84.......

Yeah, the dude at the exhaust shop said that if I get written permission from a inspection station that they will pass me with two cats, then they can install two of 'em

I just cut out two high flow cats from my exhaust, these things are almost new, probably only 1000 miles on them. I got them on a 78 sub I bought for parts, and didn't use them for my k5. Send me a PM if you want them for hell of a lot cheaper than some dam shop will give you. As far as welding them in, something you can learn to do if you go out and get you a welder, or have a friend do for a case of beer. Another idea for cats is go to a yard and check, probably get them next to nothing, just don't know about high flow ones. Best of Luck

If you ain't hurt, you ain't playin' hard enough.
