My desktop that I built 4 years ago..2.4gHz, 1gig ram blah blah etc ya know its still pretty powerful.. Had to restart it tonight and now I have no connectivity on my NIC card. Plug the cable in and no activity LED. It was fine prior to restarting. I have tried everything and Im begining to think maybe the onboard card has just died. I dunno its really pissing me off. Any ideas? I dont think its software if the activity LED isnt flashing on the NIC? Luckily I have a wireless card in there too so no real rush but I hate knowing theres something wrong..

I assume you've checked the silly things

    ie:

    Drivers

not Disabled in Device manager or network connections?
    not disabled in bios.
    different cable
    router problem?
    correctly cabled to router?

well then, its hard to say without seeing it (and knowing exactly what you mean by restart ... trust me, people can mean alot of things bu that).

the light on your nic, is nothing more than an indication of physical link between the NIC and whatever its plugged into. If there is no light (and the card isn't somehow disabled) first try a new cable, if nothing, dead nic, replace.

By restart I mean the power strip got tripped by accident. Turned PC back on and voila no connection. Trust me Ive diagnosed everything possible, cables, modem, etc. I get the green LED when cable is plugged in but no amber activity LED. I think the NIC is just dead..

Try disabling the card remove and reseat, then reinstall drivers. It works alot of the time.
