Well, I made it...finally! We left Delaware Tuesday evening about 5pm and drove til 11pm or so. We stopped in Petersburg, Va for the night. the local weather was calling for snow flurries starting in the afternoon so we wanted to leave before that. Got on the road about 11aa. Not 15 minutes after we left it started snowing...dammit. For the first 20 minues or so it wasn't bad. As soon as we got on I-85 south it got heavier. Looked like it started snowing there a lot earlier. Getting closer to the NC border the snow let up only to make way for the beloved "BLACK ICE". This slowed us down to 25mph. The wife was behind me with the animals in the jeep and I was in the Suburban with my son pulling the K5 on the trailer with my KLR650 in front of the K5. I didn't want to wipe out 4 of my vehicles and a trailer. The ditches were littered with cars. Several wrecks still on the road. Fortunately we didn't have to go near Raleigh, NC. The radio was saying the town was basically shut down due to ice on the roads. the suburban pulled great the whole way until we got to the giant mountain just east of Asheville. For 6 miles there was a third lane added to the highway for the slower traffic (me). I stopped before attempting the hill and put it in 4Lo for the extra gearing but was only able to go 20-25mph. It made it with no problems and no overheating.
So now we've been in a hotel for 2 nights so far with 4 or 5 more to go. We close on our house Tuesday morning and get our furniture delivered on wednesday.
What a crazy week it's been. I hate moving and hope to never to do it again

Welcome to the Carolina's, home of some of the craziest weather you will ever see. Glad to see you and your family had a safe trip down. Yeah wish I was done moving too but being in the military well that is just one of the things you have to deal with. My brother in law, who is in the Air Force, was just transferred from Florida to Ohio and is in shock with all of the snow. Glad I am in the Marines and will continue to stay on either the East or West coasts. Again welcome and will see you in a few months at ECBB

Hey welcome. I just joined this site not long ago but wanted to welcome you to the area. I see from your avatar that you are or was in the A.F. and coming from delaware I shall assume you was stationed at Dover. I was there for like five years myself. Currently at Pope/Afghanastan. Let me know of anytrips after mid May. Again welcome.

Yes, still in the Air Force and yes I came from Dover. Was there for the last 4 years. Glad to be gone. I'm living the good life now. I work in downtown Asheville at the federal building on a M-F schedule.weekends and holidays off. No more shift work or deployments for me after 16 years.
Guessing you get back from the sandbox in May. I think I heard rumor of a summer/fall tellico run. I'm doing all I can to get ready for the one in April but my K5 still sits on the trailer after being here for a month :surepal:
