im thinking about getting a 2 door longbed 4x4 pickup after college and flat-bedding it and narrowing the front end so i can have a dedicated trail rig.
i like all-pro off road's design with the 3 piece deck but i wanna have it narrower than the cab and taper down to the width of the frame rails at the rear end. straight back then taper off after about 4' from the cab. and i want to mount the spare tire up on top of the bars that come back from the cab, leaving space for tool/spare part boxes and a fuel cell and an ice chest... this is just wat ive thought of so far. any suggestions or ideas are welcome.
[IMG]ill get pics of my drawings up soon.

Used to run a simple 66" x 84" flatbed, never finished it, now after the one tons I'm narrowing it to 48" wide

I don't have any real plans for the flatbed, its just a rectangle on supports, but do I have one hell of set of plans for mounting a efi van tank under it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

    More here - 011011101010010101

I'll have a page for the original one up later, but it's nothing amazing

Oh, BTW, I was gonna just dovetail it, but the narrowing seemed simpler

The pics look good. One thing that i ran into was the placement of the fuel tank. Mine is in the same location you have drawn. I had a hard time getting the fill high enough to work right. If i was to do it all over again i would mount a fuel tank behind the rear axle and make it flush with the bed. Just something to keep in mind. Other than that make sure you leave lots of space between the bed and cab. I had some rocks get in there and make lots of noise.

the only flaw with your idea, that i can see, is where you want to mount your spare.. that adds A LOT of weight up high and will make the rig more prone to flopping..

The spare and the jack are both mounted too high IMO...other than that it looks all right to me.

yeah ive though about moving the tank to the rear, it'll also help with weight transfer. gotta have some weight over the rear end. i hadn't thought about the spare tire i guess if the tank were pushed to the back the spare could go where the tank is now. and i had planned on about 4" between the cab and bed. its also gonna be narrower than the cab, about 6" total.

oh and your link to wont work.

why not move the tank to behind the axle, put the spare tire vertically offset to one side of center of the cab and your ice chest/tools offset to the other side of the center of the cab??

Agreed, personally I would want the fuel cell over or behind the rear axle to have that weight back farther. My buggy will have the fuel cell all the way at the back.

yea thats what im thinking is puttin the tank all the way to the back and standing the tire up on one side fo the bed, and the cooler on the other side.
