    Hey all.

Here are some pics of my trip to FL last week, to the international drag racing hall of fame induction ceremony and Don Garlits museum of drag racing.

Inducted this year were Shirley Mudowney, Joe Lunati, Arnie " the farmer" Beswick, Jim Brisette, Gordon Collett, Jim Deist, Jim Dunn, Steve Gibbs, Bruce Larson, Joe Mondello, and photographer / journalist Jon Asher.

Got to spend some time talking with Arnie Beswick, and Jim Dunn, who were contemporaries of Don Garlits, and I also got to meet Chris Karamesines AKA "the greek" at the bar after the awards banquet.

Highlights for me included our group having a private lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Garlits, who invited us down, and I also got to meet Tom " the mongoose" McEwen.

Lots of war stories being told over drinks made for some interesting listening. As some of you know, I work for a fuel catalyst company, and our nitromethane product was used by Don Garlits back when he beat Shirley Muldowney for the title. Our product developer has been tight with Big Daddy ever since, and that's how I came to be invited.

The sad part was the fact that everyone's getting old, but I am glad I got to meet some childhood heroes before they passed.

Anyway, most of the pics are self explanantory, but the shot of the rail under construction was taken in Don's personal shop while we waited to go to lunch. I forgot to bring my patch cable to burn the pics I took to disk, so I filled up my camera pretty quick. I'll post the other pics when I get them sent to me.

    Tom

i'll never forget the day I saw Jungle Jim send the blower a couple hundred feet in the air at Englishtown... Think i was like 11, pre blower-restraint days... amazingly violent it was.. :wink1:

Wow, that does bring back some memories. I've seen all those guys at Baylands Raceway here in Fremont, Ca. (formerly Fremont Raceway) back in the day but the race track was closed in the late 80's and is now a shopping center.

That's pretty dang cool!! As was said earlier definately some memories there.

On kind of a different tack, I got a chance to go through the air museum down in Tucson here a little while back. Listened to a guided walking tour this guy that started flying in the 30's gave.

3 hours later I had to git to pick up Jenn and wasn't bored the entire time. Wished I could have stuck around longer as he wasn't done but.......:(

Jungle Jim, truly a sad story. From the pics I've seen, I think I would have liked Jungle Pam though. lol

I've never took the time to really look at her face! Never made it to her neck even, 2 big distractions stalled the progress. Is she a Butterhead?

the only thing attractive about her now is the fact that she is Jungle Pam, and was once hot.

Man, I did my Senior high English paper on ole Big Daddy. It was awesome reading how they modified those old cars to race in the early days.

    Cool pics, thanks.

Arnie was very cool to talk to. His entourage at the banquet all had orange and black ties with their suits.. it was fun to see a pontiac guy get an award at an event sponsored by Mopar. :p: During his speech he went on a long rant about people buying foreign cars..it was great, he should run for office.

Seeing stuff like that will hook you at a young age, I'll tell ya.

in 71 or 72, I was walking through the pits with my dad at dragway 42 in salem ohio.. I saw the "mongoose" funny car live and in person.. I'm about 5 or 6, I had the hot wheels snake and mongoose set, so I about crapped myself when I saw the car.. I ran up to it, and one of the crew guys handed me a rag, then he had me "polish" one of the rims.

I've never forgotten that, and I told Tom McEwen the story when I met him at the banquet, then I got his autograph. He thought it was very cool that I sought him out.
