found a new way to work on the Jimmy\'s engine

After figuring out that a fold up ladder isn't the best way to balance my 6'7" 310+ lb frame while working on the Jimmy's engine, I now just back my Dakota up to the front or side of the Jimmy and stand in the bed of it. The rubber bed mat is some nice footing and is softer than the driveway too. Soooooo easy this way---I wish I would have thought about this idea when I had my Blazer. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I'm always looking to find a new way to work on mine. I used to stand on the tubular brush guard. One time I was standing on it and didnt know that the tube I was standing on was loose. Needless to say the tube rotated and I fell off. Talk about pain and feeling stupid.

I had the same problem working on my Camaro, what I did was jack it up and put jackstands under it. Lots easier to work on, and I dont have to bend over as much.

I hate the stock bumper if you have any type of moisture on your feet don't ever plan on standing on that thing real well. I always wanted to make a warn style front bumper with diamond plate on top to make it all real easy.

Anti skid tape, like what is used on boat floors, on top of the chrome bumper makes it a lot less slippery.

so I can work on my engine, I take front tires off and stand in wheel well area. I don't have wheel wells in (yet) and plan on making something I can quickly remove.

I'm thinking about getting a "topside creeper" like Norhern Tool sells.

I've done slipped of my step ladder twice and landed my belly right on the hood latch /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif damn that hurt like hell! what's bad is I did it twice in the same day /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

that top creeper looks like the ticket though

you may be able to look at it over on their website (I haven't checked yet)

    How about like this?

I usually crawl inside the engine bay or on the plow truck I raise the blade and put my feet on it and superman across the top of the grill/radiator. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've got a little padding too so that helps! /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Re: found a new way to work on the Jimmy\'s engine

I built a scaffold type thing to work 0n my truck.
couple 2"x6" for planks on 2"x4" frame with diaganol braces to keep it from racking. All free lumber from work!
I have thought about building a 3 sided U shaped scaffold that I can just pull into to work under the hood. but haven't done it yet

This works much better than beer cooler!!

My new front bumper is still under construction, but is going to be a step bumper with diamond plate on the top for that very reason.

You guys may laugh but I bought an above ground swiming pool ladder for 3 bucks at a yard sale and put foam on the hooks so it won't scratch the paint I just hook it over the fenders or the front pushguard If I have to work from the front or side it works really well or I just climb right in and set on the core support with my feet on the inner fenderwells /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif
